Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity To Make $10,000 Donation For New Baseball Field Scoreboards At Ward 5 Park
Councilman Cedric Crear To Recognize Fraternity’s Charitable Work
At July 17 City Council Meeting
Ward 5 Councilman Cedric Crear will accept a $10,000 donation from the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity for two new scoreboards at the Kianga Isoke Palacio Park baseball fields at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 20. The fields are home to the Bolden Little League.
“I’m happy to accept this generous donation to upgrade these fields at the Doolittle Complex that serve so many children in Ward 5,” said Councilman Crear. “Alpha Phi Alpha has a long tradition of charitable works and we welcome this brotherhood to Las Vegas for its 95th General Convention.”
As part of the group’s general convention, the fraternity is teaming with the city of Las Vegas to host Alpha Day July 20 at the Doolittle Complex, 951 W. Lake Mead Blvd. The day will begin with the donation at 9 a.m. at the baseball fields at Kianga Isoke Palacio Park. In addition, the city’s Strong Start Go Academy Mobile Pre-K will be at the complex from 9 a.m. to noon.
Alpha Day also will include a summer splash party for the community from noon to 3 p.m. at the Doolittle Pool, located at 1950 N. J St. Also at the pol from 10 a.m. to noon, free swim lessons will be offered for families.
From 12:30 to 3 p.m., fraternity member Congressman Steven Horsford will host a health fair and symposium at Nevada Partners adjacent to the Doolittle Complex at 710 W. Lake Mead Blvd.
“Alpha Phi Alpha is pleased to help support Las Vegas youth through educational and sporting activities,” said Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. General President Dr. Everett B. Ward. “Our fraternity is proud to donate to the baseball scoreboard as a way to promote the message, ‘Go to High School, Go to College’.”
Councilman Crear will recognize and thank Alpha Phi Alpha and its members for their generosity at 9 a.m. at the Wednesday, July 17, City Council meeting, located in Council Chambers at City Hall, 495 S. Main St.
“The Doolittle Complex is the hub for a host of activities tailored for the Ward 5 Community,” said Michael Blow, president of the local Alpha Phi Alpha chapter, Theta Pi Lambda. “We are honored and excited to be partners in the effort to provide scoreboards that will enhance the enjoyment of the little league games.”
Alpha Phi Alpha is the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African- American men. It was founded Dec. 4, 1906, at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of brotherhood among African descendants in this country.
