Fire Damages Downtown Apartment
American Red Cross Assisting Four People Displaced
Las Vegas firefighters responded to the Stewart Arms Apartments, 230 N. Eleventh St. at 3:33 p.m. Tuesday, May 7. On arrival heavy smoke was showing from the second floor of a three story apartment building. There were reports that some people could not escape the third floor because of the smoke and there were also reports that numerous people were suffering from smoke inhalation. A second alarm was requested to respond to assist with the rescues and medical victims.
Firefighters found the fire in a small studio apartment on the second floor. The fire was extinguished in less than ten minutes and confined to the apartment. People who were trapped by the smoke on the third floor were escorted by firefighters to safety and checked by paramedics as a precaution. None needed medical assistance. The other report of multiple smoke inhalation victims were also unfounded. A few people who were evacuated with pre-existing medical conditions were checked by paramedics as a precaution. One person was checked for smoke inhalation, treated and released. No one was taken to the hospital during the incident.
During the investigation phase approximately 75 people stood outside waiting to return to their apartments when a sudden rain occurred with gusty winds. A RTC bus was brought to the scene for the people to take shelter in until they could return to their apartments.
Four people are displaced by the fire, the American Red Cross is assisting them.
The cause of the fire is undetermined, it caused $50,000 damage. The damage was confined to the one apartment.
There are fire alarms in the building and they operated to notify occupants of the fire.
