Las Vegas Fire & Rescue Launches Free Smoke Alarm Program
Many Homes In City Still Do Not Have Smoke Alarms
Everyone knows smoke alarms save lives. What many people do not know is that many homes in Las Vegas still do not have any smoke alarms or do not have a sufficient number of smoke alarms needed for adequate protection. Las Vegas Fire & Rescue has launched a new program that will provide free smoke alarms to homes inside the city of Las Vegas installed by Fire & Rescue personnel.
Most fatal fires occur between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., the time when most people sleep. When people sleep, they lose their sense of smell. As the home quickly fills with smoke, it carries gases that will go undetected by those asleep and put them in a deeper sleep until they eventually stop breathing. The smoke alarm is the only device that can detect the smoke while you sleep and provide adequate warning. Smoke alarms save lives every day in the U.S. Just last week a family of two woke to the sound of the smoke alarm in their house to find it filling with smoke. They were able to escape the fire in their house without injury due to the smoke alarm alerting them.
Since many homes in Las Vegas still do not have smoke alarms or they do not have the adequate number of smoke alarms needed to provide adequate protection, the Fire Prevention Division is providing free smoke alarms to those in need and will also install them.
The program is open to any homeowner in the city of Las Vegas proper. If you are not sure if your home is in the city proper, visit http://am-i-in-vegas.herokuapp.com/ and enter your address. If the answer is yes, you are eligible for the program. If you are living in a rental property, you must obtain permission in writing from the owner of the home to be considered for the program.
Next call Las Vegas Fire & Rescue Fire Prevention Division at 702-229-0366 or e-mail your request to lvfireprevention@LasVegasNevada.gov. An appointment will be set up with a fire inspector who will visit of your home and see what is needed specifically to make it safe. Smoke alarms will be installed, and fire safety education material will also be provided. Fire Prevention will also do a free inspection of the home for fire hazards and they will even show how to conduct a proper fire escape drill in the home if requested, and give pointers on what to do if a fire occurs.
The program is available for homes, mobile homes, condominiums and townhomes. If your apartment unit does not have smoke alarms installed, please contact the Fire Prevention Division.
There is no excuse not to have smoke alarms in all homes in Las Vegas. They are available for free and will be installed by professional fire personnel. All that is needed is to call and make an appointment.
This program will continue while supplies of smoke alarms last.
NOTE: All smoke alarms have a life expectancy of approximately 10 years. After 10 years all smoke alarms should be replaced. Smoke alarms have a date stamped on the back, add 10 years to that date for the expiration date.
SMOKE ALARMS DO SAVE LIVES IN LAS VEGAS.
