Safety Fair Oct. 6 Kicks Off Fire Prevention Week In Las
Vegas
Will You Have Smoke
Alarms & Firemen With Your Pizza Oct. 7-13?
To kick off Fire Prevention Week Oct. 7-13, 2018,
Las Vegas Fire and Rescue (LVFR) will host a safety fair from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Indian Hills apartments community, located at 4550 W.
Sahara Ave. LVFR is partnering with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police
Department to educate the tenants, staff and guests on various fire and life
safety topics. First Responders will be on site providing vehicle
demonstrations, safety tips and training, and even free blood pressure checks.
LVFR also is working with PIZZA HUT® to “deliver”
pizzas and smoke alarm services in high-risk areas of the city several evenings
during Fire Prevention Week. While supplies last, fire prevention staff and
community volunteers will pay for the pizza ordered if the homeowner agrees to
smoke alarm testing and some quick smoke alarm/fire escape education. If the
home has no working smoke alarms, new sealed-battery 10-year smoke alarms will
be installed for free. Home safety inspections will be offered, too. (Participants must be homeowners within city
of Las Vegas limits.) Fire prevention staff will follow up in six months to be
sure homeowners have tested the smoke alarms and practiced an exit drill since
the last visit.
Following several recent catastrophic
fires throughout the Las Vegas Valley, LVFR began a comprehensive apartment
inspection program. The goal was to ensure basic safeguards, such as smoke
alarms and fire extinguishers, were installed and maintained, while providing
life safety education to owners, managers and tenants. The two-story Indian
Hills apartment community, built in 1988 with 484 units, has been a success
story of the program. OlenLiving, which manages Indian Hills Apartments and
many other properties throughout Clark County, is not only in full compliance
following its recent fire inspection, but exceeded fire code requirements by
adding several non-required safety devices throughout their Indian Hills
property. The management company plans to install the same devices throughout
their Southern Nevada properties and continue this proactive practice
throughout their communities nationwide.
This
year’s fire prevention campaign, “Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can
happen anywhere™,” works to educate people about three basic but
essential steps to take to reduce the likelihood of having a fire –– and how to
escape safely in the event of one:
The National Fire Protection
Association has sponsored the public observance of Fire Prevention Week since
1922. President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed Fire Prevention Week a national
observance in 1925, making it the longest-running public health observance in the
United States. During Fire Prevention Week, children, adults, and teachers
learn how to stay safe in case of a fire. Firefighters provide lifesaving
public education in an effort to drastically decrease casualties caused by
fires.
Fire Prevention
Week is observed each year during the week of Oct. 9, in commemoration of the
Great Chicago Fire, which began Oct. 8, 1871. This conflagration killed more
than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures,
and burned more than 2,000 acres of land.
Look.
Listen. Learn. Be Aware. Fire Can Happen Anywhere.™
