Unattended Candle Starts Northwest Las Vegas House On Fire Sept. 15
Four Adults and One Teen Are Displaced By Fire
Las Vegas firefighters responded to a house fire on
Gumwood Road (Smoke Ranch / Torrey Pines) at 10:40 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, after
fire dispatchers received several 9-1-1 calls.
On arrival, smoke and flames were showing from the
one-story, wood-frame/stucco house. Firefighters forced entry into the house and found the fire in one of
the bedrooms. The fire then broke out a window in the room to the outside and
spread to the yard and started the yard on fire. Firefighters had the fire under control in
less than 10 minutes.
The fire gutted the bedroom and caused moderate
smoke damage throughout the house. There was moderate damage to the outside of
the house also. Damage was estimated at $50,000.
Fire investigators determined the fire started in
one of the bedrooms. The occupant told investigators that she lit candles in
the bedroom for a prayer session. She thought she put them out as she left to
take a shower. While in the shower, she smelled smoke. When she went into the
hallway, she saw the fire. She escaped without injury. The fire was ruled
accidental.
Five people are displaced due to the fire; they are
staying with relatives. There were no reported injuries.
