Fatal House Fire In
Peccole Ranch Wednesday, Sept. 12
One Person and One Pet Dog Died In The Blaze
Las Vegas firefighters responded to a house fire
which took the life of one of the occupants and a pet dog Wednesday afternoon,
Sept. 12. Two other family members are displaced. There were no reported
injuries to first responders at the scene.
Fire dispatchers received a call at 3:05 p.m. that
smoke was visible from the roof and there was a burning smell from a house on
Sienna Ridge Drive in Peccole Ranch (Ft. Apache/Sahara), and when they knocked
on the front door, no one answered.
When firefighters arrived at the one-story, wood-frame/stucco
house, very light smoke was visible from the rear of the house. Firefighters
went to the rear of the house with a fire hose. While checking the back
firefighters saw that one of patio doors was blackened from smoke; they knew
they had found the fire. They broke through the patio door and found a stuffed
chair and mattress on fire. Using the
fire hose, they put the fire out in a few minutes. The room was full of smoke
all the way down to the floor.
Firefighters entered the room and went for the
bedroom door to the hallway. At the bedroom door in the hallway on the floor,
they found an unresponsive middle-aged woman. Other firefighters moved on and
searched the rest of the house for any other victims; a pet dog also was found that
was deceased. Within a few minutes, firefighters had the fire completely out
and removed the smoke from the house so fire investigators could look into what
caused the fire.
Nearly all of the fire damage was confined to the
rear bedroom, which was gutted. The rest of the house had light smoke damage.
There was no visible damage on the outside of the house. Damage was estimated at $35,000.
An investigation was conducted by Las Vegas Fire
& Rescue arson investigators, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police and the Clark
County Coroner’s Office.
Fire investigators believe the fire started in the
rear bedroom in the stuffed chair. Careless smoking cannot be ruled out.
Smoking material was found in the room and the woman did smoke.
Two other family members were not at home at the
time of the fire. They are displaced.
This is the fourth fatal fire in the city of Las
Vegas proper this year. Careless smoking is the leading cause of fatal fires in
Las Vegas.
There were smoke alarms in the house and they were
working when firefighters arrived.
Firefighters from the Clark County Fire Department
also assisted at the fire.
