Public Art Unveiling
And Street Party Planned To Celebrate Completion Of Main Street Beautification
Project
Main Street Lights Up
With Radial Symmetry Public Art Dedication
The community is invited to join Mayor
Carolyn G. Goodman and Councilman Bob Coffin tonight, as Main Street lights up
to celebrate the completion of the more than two-year Main Street
beautification project.
A
new sculpture, Radial Symmetry, will
be unveiled at 6:30 p.m. at the corner of Main and Commerce streets. At 7:30 p.m.,
the celebration moves to the corner of Main and California Avenue, where local
businesses will host a street party and new festoon lighting will be
illuminated above the street.
“We are so excited for this project to be
completed so that we can officially light up Main Street,” Mayor Goodman said.
“The fabulous new showgirl gateway sign marks the south end of Main, and now we
will unveil a beautiful new sculpture at the north end of the couplet. We have
widened sidewalks and added lighting and landscaping, creating a complete
street that is welcoming and inviting for those frequenting our wonderful
businesses.”
The public is invited to celebrate at
these events Sept. 6, and to come out for First Friday Sept. 7 to view the new
artwork, lighting and street improvements while browsing through galleries,
bars and businesses.
Radial Symmetry was created by 30-year Las
Vegas resident Luis Varela-Rico. The two 16- foot-diameter stainless steel shapes
that make up the sculpture where inspired by Southern Paiute basket weaving.
The sculpture sits at the one-way couplet junction, with Commerce taking
southbound traffic while Main conducts northbound traffic.
This one-way couplet runs between Las Vegas
Boulevard and Bonneville, enhancing pedestrian safety on both streets. The
approximately $52 million Main Street Improvement Project brings wider
sidewalks, bike lanes, additional landscaping and curb extensions to both Main
and Commerce streets. Funding was provided by the Regional Transportation
Commission of Southern Nevada, the city of Las Vegas and Fuel Revenue Indexing.
The contractor was Las Vegas Paving Corporation.
The lighting on Main currently extends one
block, but later this fall five blocks of main between Colorado and Hoover
avenues will feature the new overhead lights.
