ReInvent Schools Las Vegas Summit Focuses On 1,100 Teachers And School Staff Aug. 10

Program Provides Community Services At 13 Local Schools

Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman will welcome teachers and staff to the 2018-19 ReInvent Schools Las Vegas Summit at Texas Station beginning at 8:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 10. More than 1,100 teachers and staff from 13 local schools are expected to attend the event in the Dallas Ballroom, located at 2101 Texas Star Lane.

Others speaking at the summit include Mayor Pro Tem Lois Tarkanian, Councilman Bob Coffin, Councilman Cedric Crear, Clark County School District Deputy Superintendent Diane Gullett and City Manager Scott Adams. The keynote speaker is José Muñoz, director of the Coalition for Community Schools, an initiative of the Institute for Educational Leadership.

“The united effort of Reinvent Schools amplifies the values of the Coalition for Community Schools, where the pressure of student performance doesn’t overshadow the purpose of a community performing for them,” Muñoz said.

ReInvent Schools Las Vegas focuses on academic achievement, expanded learning, wraparound services, and family and community engagement at underperforming, urban-core schools. The initiative is a unique partnership between the Clark County School District and the city of Las Vegas, in collaboration with other local nonprofits. ReInvent Schools are hubs for services for students, their families and the community.

In 2016, four elementary schools launched under this model, and now nine more schools have been named ReInvent Schools in Las Vegas. Program schools include, J.T. McWilliams, Wendell P. Williams, Matt Kelly, Howard Hollingsworth, Robert E. Lunt, Red Rock, Kermit R. Booker, West Preparatory Academy, Rose Warren, Bertha Ronzone, Doris Reed, Ollie Detwiler and Arturo Cambeiro.

The city works to supplement education through before- and after-school programming and community partnerships designed to improve educational achievement, attendance and graduation rates.
