DjangoVegas! Returns To Downtown Las Vegas

The Annual Celebration Will Feature Gypsy Jazz Musicians And A Local Jam Session

DjangoVegas! Gypsy Jazz Festival returns to the Historic Fifth Street School, 401 S. Fourth St., Saturday, June 16, from 4 to 10 p.m. The annual celebration of the music of Django Reinhardt and other gypsy jazz musicians past and present will feature Black Market Trust, Harmonious Wail with Bjorn Thoroddsen, and Hot Club of Las Vegas. Tickets are $20 plus tax for all ages.

Featured on television shows such as ABC’s “Happy Endings" and Hulu’s “Casual,” the five members of The Black Market Trust will bring their gypsy sound and intricate vocal harmonies to entertain Las Vegas. Based in Los Angeles, the group recently released a new album, “Just One of Those Things,” which reflects their musical roots and diverse influences. PBS describes their live performance as “Virtuosic playing, beautiful harmonies and fun interaction with the crowd.”

Celebrating over 30 years in the music industry, Harmonious Wail is known as the “Dr. Feelgood” of gypsy jazz. The Grammy-nominated band members pride themselves on creating a unique musical journey for listeners by combining the searing wit, humor and mandolin virtuosity of vintage Jethro Burns performances, the Continental panache of Django and charm of Edith Piaf-inspired vocals. They will be bringing along Björn Thoroddsen, one of Iceland’s leading jazz guitarists, for their festival performance. Originally a rock musician, Thoroddsen now tours both as soloist and with bands all around the world playing whatever style of music he feels like at the time.

Local gypsy jazz band and festival alumni, The Hot Club of Las Vegas, will return once again. The band, which started as a passion project, performs gypsy jazz music past and present as well as boleros, flamenco, rhumbas and more.

A local musicians jam session will be held from 4 to 6 p.m.; this session will be open to anyone who wishes to participate. Performances start at 6 p.m. This festival is supported, in part, with funds provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, and the Nevada Arts Council, a state agency.

Parking will be available in the garage between Third and Fourth streets at Clark Avenue. Refreshments will be available for purchase. For tickets and more information, visit lasvegasnevada.gov/djangovegas or call 702-229-ARTS (2787).
