Drought continues to reduce Southern Nevada’s water supplies, and with Lake Mead at historic lows, the community is being asked to do its part in helping to conserve precious natural resources. The biggest use of our community's water supply is outdoor landscape watering. Removing unused grass helps saves water and money as many homeowners find cost savings on their water bills. The Southern Nevada Water Authority makes it easy to convert unused grass by offering a temporary increased rebate of $5 per square foot of grass converted to water efficient landscaping. This enhanced incentive is available only to homeowners who complete landscape conversions by the end of 2024.
A portion of this temporary increase in funding are from state and federal grants. For program conditions and to take advantage of this limited time $5 incentive, visit snwa.com.
There are amazing opportunities to share with your loved ones and friends who are returning from military service or who plan to leave the service within a year as well as veterans, Nevada National Guard members, Reservists, and their spouses; the UNLV’s Nevada Forward Initiative.
This Initiative was created for those wanting to continue to make a difference in our country and in their community and who know they can do that by becoming a K through 12 teacher in our Nevada Public Schools. The Initiative is designed for:
-
Those who have 0-60 hours in college general education core credits. You can find information on the UNLV Rebel Start Academy pre-apprenticeship program at http://nvforward.sites.unlv.edu/programs/rsa
-
Those who have already earned at least 60 hours in college general education core classes accepted by Nevada Institutions of Higher Education. The Initiative has as its goal for those in this category to complete their degrees in education and to be eligible for a Nevada Professional Teaching License in one calendar year--See The UNLV Paraprofessional Pathways Project (PPP) apprenticeship program at https://nvforward.sites.unlv.edu/programs/ppp/
-
Those who already have a bachelor’s degree or higher in a field other than education. See The UNLV Accelerated Alternative Route to Licensure (A-ARL) program at https://nvforward.sites.unlv.edu/programs/a-arl/
With funding that is now available, the Initiative is being offered to those accepted with tuition covered at no cost. It is indeed a rare opportunity. Clark County School District still has many additional second-career opportunities for those who are prepared in such fields as clerical, nursing, social work, speech therapy, physical and occupational therapies, skilled trades, operations, bus drivers, etc. Check out the Patriots to Education-Nevada Coalition for more details at http://www.patriotstoeducation-nv.com
Metro's Convention Center Area Command is at the epicenter of the Strip corridor. They would not be able to address as many incidents as they do without their valuable partnerships with resort and retail security teams. Here are just a few recent examples of Security Personnel and LVMPD working together to ensure the safety of our locals and visitors alike:
- In June, a luxury retail outlet reported an $18,000 theft from their store. Resort security personnel broadcast an immediate "Be On The Lookout" bulletin and located the two suspects involved. The suspects were apprehended after a short foot pursuit. The stolen property from the store was recovered as well as additional stolen property from another luxury retail outlet The suspects possessed tools utilized for defeating security systems. The suspects are believed to be members of an organized theft ring and were arrested by LVMPD for Burglary, Grand Theft and possession of Burglary Tools.
- Also in June, a Strip Resort Security Team responded to the Casino floor regarding a report of a physical altercation in progress. When Security responded, they located a male who was fighting another male patron and harassing an unidentified female at a slot machine. Security previously trespassed this subject a total of three times, due to him actively attempting to fight Security. When Security spoke to the male, he refused to identify himself and leave the property. He was arrested for trespassing then escorted to the Security Interview room to await police response. When Metro Officers arrived, they discovered that the suspect had outstanding warrants. He then was transported to Clark County Detention Center.
- A Strip Resort Surveillance Team observed four male adults attempting to pickpocket a patron near the valet area. The males were recognized as possible suspects in multiple pickpocketing reports. The Security Team responded to the area and all subjects fled the area in different directions. Two suspects were able to flee the scene, while the other two were taken into custody by LVMPD Officers positioned along LV Blvd. The suspects were then charged with conspiracy to commit robbery.
