May 2024
Dear District G Residents,
We had quite a busy April full of various events around District G and May is no different. This month there are many free community events being held at Whitney Recreation Center and in the City of Henderson. I hope you are able to go to a few that you find interesting so you can get outside and enjoy the warm weather.
While I also mention this below, I'd really like to give an individual shout out to Gene Ward Elementary School 3rd Grader, Evelyn Hernandez. She entered her school's art contest and her amazing work is now being proudly displayed on a billboard by the airport!
As always, do not hesitate to email me at DistrictG@clarkcountynv.gov or call my office at (702) 455-3500 with any questions or concerns you may have. You can also follow me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Ole Red, a creative collaboration between country music superstar Blake Shelton and Opry Entertainment Group, the owners of the Grand Ole Opry, is a new restaurant, bar and entertainment venue located in front of Caesars Entertainment’s Horseshoe Las Vegas at the Grand Bazaar Shops on the Fabulous Las Vegas Strip. Ole Red provides food, drink and live entertainment featuring up and coming musical artists. Ole Red provides musical artists a launchpad for their entertainment careers and artists play night and day. In recognition of Ole Red's Grand Opening, I was honored to proclaim April 17, 2024 as Ole Red Day in Clark County and present Blake Shelton and the Opry Entertainment with proclamations and keys to the fabulous Las Vegas Strip!

I was happy to work with Shoes That Fit, Metro's Southeast Area Command STOP Coalition, Assemblywoman Venicia Considine and the administration of Sister Robert Joseph Bailey Elementary School to provide new shoes to their students. There were plenty of smiles all around. Thank you to all of the volunteers from Metro's Southeast Area Command and the Clark County Fire Department, along with all of the volunteers of the STOP Coalition that made this event happen.
As we shared in our April Newsletter, the Clark County School District (CCSD) has begun to recruit personnel for the 2024-2025 School Year. CCSD has declared a “critical shortage” for over 1,000 positions. It estimates it will need at least 1400 new teachers and career- technical instructors plus approximately 500 new support staff (paraprofessionals, IT, bus drivers, skilled trades, operations). Those numbers will probably increase with retirements and attrition. They also need school nurses and other healthcare professionals, school safety personnel, career-technical instructors, etc.
Several Heroes to Education Outreach Partners have really stepped up to help CCSD with this outreach to veterans, Nevada National Guard members, Reservists, those leaving military service within a short period of time, their spouses, and the spouses of active-duty personnel aware of opportunities in Nevada Public Education in general. Examples include:
- Nellis Air Force Base Airman and Family Readiness Center is making copies of the Flyer available in the Center and posting in through Social Media
- Nellis Air Force Base Education Office is also making copies of the flyer available in their office and has agreed to lead a Workshop for Nevada Districts on becoming an “Approved Employers” for the SkillBridge Program. This is a program which allows service members leaving the service within six months to work for an Approved Employer while still earning their military pay and benefits. The program costs the Employer nothing while giving the active-duty person a chance to learn and to make a wise decision about their employment future
- Nevada Department of Veteran Services will make the flyer available in their offices and take them to all veteran events they attend for distribution as well as post information on their social media
- The Nevada Workforce Development Office will display posters of the flyer and make the flyers available in their offices
- The Work For Warriors are distributing information to all Nevada National Guard Members
Again we are asking you, the people of this district, to join us in this effort and to provide copies of the flyer below to your loved ones who are returning from fulfilling their service commitments, or who are veterans, National Guard members, Reservists and their spouses aware of these meaningful opportunities.
Be Part of the Solution!!
In partnership with Connell Outdoor Advertising and Gene Ward Elementary School, I was happy to recognize 3rd grader Evelyn Hernandez for her outstanding artwork that is now being featured on a billboard facing Siegfried and Roy Park! We also had Pinkbox Doughnuts handing out free refreshments to the attendees.
What a treat it was to unveil this billboard with everyone, including Evelyn's parents, classmates and her art teacher, Shalom Pilon. Congratulations Evelyn, you are one talented young lady and I can't wait to see what you do next!

In spite of the bad weather, the Commissioner's Cup got off to a great start at Sunset Park. This annual tournament grows every year and I'm happy to be able to offer such a successful event. Thank you to Excel Pickleball and the Clark County Parks & Rec Sports staff. Without them, the tournament wouldn't be as successful as it is. We'll see you next year!
