Baby Safety: Commissioner Naft, Pediatric Experts Talk Best Practices
On September 20, Commissioner Naft, alongside pediatric experts from Dignity Health, held a press conference to recognize National Baby Safety Month. Dr. Carla Laos, Medical Director for Siena Hospital’s Pediatric Emergency Department, and Tawanda Evans-McIntosh, Community Educator, spoke about best practices for keeping infants and children safe.
Using baby-proof eating tools, avoiding small refrigerator magnets, buying toys without removable parts, and doing car-seat safety checks: There are countless ways to create a safe environment while caring for children. It may feel overwhelming or scary, but Dignity Health’s Community Benefits department provides parenting classes and resources to help; a list of classes and events can be found on the Dignity Health website or by calling (855) 948-3316.
The press conference was held in Siena campus’ new Pediatric Emergency Department — the only hospital emergency room in the southeast part the valley catering specifically to children. Its grand opening will provide a comfortable, welcoming environment for children to receive care and open a dozen beds in the hospital’s general emergency department.

On September 2, Commissioner Naft joined Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s Traffic Safety Officers training. Taking to Clark County roads, the training prepares officers to notice signs of impairment in drivers.
“I’m extremely impressed with the thoroughness of the training, the dedication of the participating officers, and the success rates,” said Commissioner Naft.

The West Flamingo Senior Center and Commissioner Naft made Grandparents Day 2023 an event to remember. Families enjoyed a fun-filled day as they ate delicious food, played games, painted ceramics, and danced.
Commissioner Naft loved celebrating with everyone, saying, “It’s become our tradition to celebrate the special relationship between grandparents and grandchildren at the West Flamingo Senior Center.”
The Senior Center provided the perfect backdrop for the day, as it serves as a place for adults ages 50 and up to socialize, attend events — like dances and game nights — exercise, swim, and more!

On September 14, Commissioner Naft spoke to traffic safety stakeholders at the 2023 Nevada Traffic Safety Summit, an annual conference hosted by Nevada Department of Transportation and Department of Public Safety. After expressing appreciation for the attendees — local law enforcement officers and traffic-safety leaders — for their dedication to keeping Clark County and southern Nevada roads safe, the Commissioner spoke on the importance of implementing automated traffic enforcement mechanisms as the next crucial step in reducing crashes and saving lives.
The Commissioner suggested an automated traffic enforcement coalition can create laws that embrace technology as a force of good, make roads safer, and the vision of safer communities for drivers and pedestrians a reality.
Congratulations to the Nevada Traffic Safety Summit award winners — individuals and organizations who have made significant contriutions over the past year to transportation safety in Nevada.

Commissioner Naft recently toured parks around District A. Improvements are regularly being made to County parks — including lighting updates, graffiti cleanup, and sport court resurfacing — but the Commissioner was eager to hear what more can be done to elevate park users’ experiences.
