The UNLV Traffic Safety Research Office recently hosted an immersive, two-week program designed to guide high school students on how to redesign roads with a focus on safety. Participants live on campus at UNLV for the duration of the program while they explore modes of transportation, urban infrastructure planning, pedestrian safety, and various career opportunities. They also offer college preparation and life skills activities, college seminars, UNLV lab tours, field trips, peer mentoring sessions with UNLV students, and exciting group projects.
Commissioner Naft attended on July 22 to discuss aspects of road safety, ranging from transportation infrastructure to key safety details. The Commissioner engaged with participants and stressed the importance of keeping our roads safe not only for drivers, but for pedestrians and all users.
“It is critical that we prioritize road safety for all users," said Michael Naft. "I commend the students who have participated, facilitators who have volunteered their time, and the organizers, including Erin Breen, for making it all happen."

Commissioner Naft visited independent businesses, new developments, and major employers based in the District. Meeting with local business owners, developers, and employees, the day consisted of discussion about upcoming and ongoing projects, learned more about businesses, and answered any questions or concerns they had.
The day began with a presentation at Pinkbox commemorating the grand opening of their new location in Laughlin.
Next, the Commissioner visited the newly developed commercial office space, Axiom. The space reflects a contemporary, eco-friendly, and energy efficient office space that is now open to the public. After making a stop at the Warby Parker lab, he checked out the progress within the UNLV Office of Economic Development at the Harry Reid Research and Technology Park. At 122 acres with approximately 93 acres of dedicated tech space, the mixed-use Harry Reid Research and Technology Park will serve as UNLV’s tech incubator, advancing research, business development, and economic growth in Clark County. Wrapping up the day, the Commissioner stopped by the newest Café Lola, located on Rainbow and Warm Springs.

In continuous efforts to lower urban temperatures, The Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) recently established a new program increasing the number of trees planted in our community to improve resiliency to extreme heat. This tree-planting initiative is part of the Water Smart Landscapes rebate program, where participants can receive $100 per tree for all new trees that meet the program’s 50 percent coverage requirements during a grass landscape conversion.
Since trees require less water than grass to maintain while offering significant benefits to the community, such as shade and lowered ground temperatures, adding more trees remains a community-wide initiative.
