June 2023
Dear District G Residents,
Some great things have been happening in District G just in time for Summer. Last month, we were able to open the long-awaited Whitney Water Park, and this month we'll be celebrating the grand re-opening of the Sunset Park Tennis Courts! See below for more information.
The 1 October Memorial Committee has been hard at work reviewing submissions for a permanent memorial to remember the events of the Route 91 Festival tragedy. There are five design concepts that are currently exhibited in the Rotunda of the Clark County Government Center. Check out this newsletter for more information.
As always, do not hesitate to email me at DistrictG@clarkcountynv.gov or call my office at (702) 455-3500 with any questions or concerns you may have. You can also follow me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

After almost 5 years of planning and construction, the all new Whitney Water Park is OPENED!! The water park will be open all Summer on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. For more information, click here.
The 1 October Memorial Design Team Exhibit featuring five design concepts for a permanent memorial to remember the events of the Route 91 Festival tragedy is on display in the Clark County Government Center Rotunda.
The public can view models of the proposed concepts in-person at the Government Center Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily. The public also can visit the 1 October Memorial Committee’s website by clicking here to learn more details about each concept.
Clark County is hosting a design team presentation event on Wednesday, June 14, in Clark County Commission Chambers from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Each team will offer 40-minute presentations about their proposals. The event will be carried live on Clark County Television (CCTV) and online at www.youtube.com/user/ClarkCountyNV/live and on the 1 October Memorial Committee’s Facebook page @1OctoberMemorial. Following the presentation, the public can take part in a short online community engagement survey. A link to the survey will be on the committee’s website from June 15 – 29. Participants will be asked whether the concepts meet the committee’s mission, vision and goals for the permanent memorial. The results of the survey will be incorporated into the evaluation process. The evaluation scores will be presented to the 1 October Memorial Committee at its next scheduled meeting on Wednesday, July 26, 9 a.m. in Clark County Commission Chambers. At that time, the committee will deliberate on its design recommendation. The committee’s recommendation is scheduled to be submitted to the County Commission on Tuesday, Sept. 5. The recommended design for the 1 October Memorial project will be on display in the Rotunda as part of the exhibit to commemorate the 6th anniversary of the tragedy.
The 1 October Memorial Committee kicked off a three-phase process last summer to gather ideas from the public and professional teams for the memorial. The first phase of the process invited the public to submit artwork and ideas for the memorial while calling upon professional design teams to express interest in participating. The second phase began in January when five teams selected by the committee were introduced to the community and began developing formal proposals for the memorial. The teams were required to review all creative expressions submissions received from the public and were encouraged to offer community engagement opportunities to gather feedback during their design process.
With the kickoff of the summer holiday travel season under way, Clark County and partnering agencies are asking the public to follow the rules regarding fireworks.
Fireworks labeled “safe and sane” are the only type of consumer fireworks allowed in Clark County and the local cities and only from June 28 through July 4 each year when nonprofit groups are allowed to sell them for fundraising purposes at locally licensed and inspected stands.
All fireworks, including those labeled “safe and sane,” are a concern during the spring and summer months when the threat of wildland fire is highest in Southern Nevada. No fireworks of any kind are allowed at Clark County Wetlands Park and other local parks, or on public lands in the region including Mount Charleston, Lake Mead and Red Rock Canyon.
Over the Fourth of July holiday, the use of illegal fireworks purchased outside the Las Vegas Valley has been a growing problem in Clark County and the neighboring cities that officials are asking for the public’s help and cooperation to address. Illegal fireworks are a source of thousands of noise and nuisance complaints, especially on July Fourth, one of the busiest nights of the year for emergency responders. Safe and sane” fireworks include sparklers and fireworks that keep to a small, circular area on the ground and don’t explode in the air. Illegal fireworks include firecrackers, Roman candles, and sky rockets – anything made of highly combustible materials.
The inter-agency “You Light It, We Write It” campaign to educate the public about what’s allowed and not allowed – and the penalties if caught using illegal fireworks – will be active over the July 4th holiday. Information about the initiative is available at www.YouLightItWeWriteIt.Vegas. As part of the effort, residents are urged not to call 911 to report illegal fireworks to keep 911 free for life-threatening emergencies. Instead, the public is asked to report location complaints about illegal fireworks online at www.IspyFireworks.com. The information is used for data collection purposes and to plan law enforcement actions over the holiday. Offenders caught using illegal fireworks in unincorporated County areas face a minimum fine of $500. Legislation approved by the Nevada State Legislature in 2021 allows for fines of up to $10,000 for large amounts of illegal fireworks found within the community.

On Saturday, June 17th from 8:00am - 10:00am, we’ll be celebrating the opening of the completely overhauled tennis courts at Sunset Park. The new complex includes new tennis courts with state-of-the-art surfacing, new chain link fencing and fabric, new bleachers with covered shade structures, a new water fountain with a bottle filler and a new practice wall! The courts were long overdue for major improvements and after hearing from many of our tennis-playing constituents, we are delighted we were able to make this happen. At the complex dedication on the 17th, we will hold a youth skills clinic from 8:30am – 9:30am provided by the USTA Nevada. We’ll have free cookies and a free food truck and will be handing out free giveaways. We hope to see you there. Remember, that’s the Sunset Park Tennis Complex on Saturday, June 17th beginning at 8:00am.
