All along Blue Diamond Road, from Fort Apache to Dean Martin, you'll see public art on the utility boxes painted recently!
ZAP 13 consisted of twelve local artists who were chosen to paint twelve traffic light boxes. These local artists were chosen for their unique styles, thoughtful designs, and connections to the community surrounding the area. Each artist created designs specifically for ZAP 13 and the Blue Diamond neighborhood.
Thank you to all of the artists for their contributions to this fantastic project: Aaron Cowan, Said Gomez, Homero Hidalgo, Stormi Holt, Bonnie Kelso, Lee Lanier, Tracy Martin, Doris Martinez, Jimi Ramirez, Rebecca Sullinger, Kayla Talastas, and Jamie Zepeda.

The recent redistricting in Clark County means that many areas have new representatives at the local, State and Federal level. Come find out about the changes and meet Commissioner Jones and other area representatives at the Second Annual Neighborhood Block Party on Sunday April 30th from 11am - 1pm. This is a great opportunity for the neighbors in the Historic Section 10 & 11 communities to get to know your elected officials and share your concerns with them regarding your area.
Join the fun at Davis Family Park located at 6698 Tara Avenue, on the northeast corner of Tara Avenue and Redwood Street.

Commissioner Jones joined Commissioners McCurdy and Segerblom and UMC leadership to celebrate the history of UMC and unveil the future plans for the hospital. The facility will undergo a revitalization project that will refresh the facility with a new modern appearance. The event highlighted UMC's vital role as the valley's premier Trauma Center and Children’s Hospital.
As an avid reader himself, Commissioner Jones loved having the opportunity to read to some of the youngsters at Acelero Learning Clark County during National Reading Week in March.
Hunting for eggs was just a small part of the fun at the Egg Run held on March 31st at Desert Breeze Park. Team Jones, Metro's Spring Valley Area Command, and Clark County Parks and Recreation put on an egg-celent even that included archery, corn hole, food truck, crafts, and of course, plenty of eggs!
Commissioner Jones, the new Chair of the Regional Transportation Commission, had the pleasure of speaking with Senator Catherine Cortez Masto and Senator Jacky Rosen on how to continue to bring more money back to Southern Nevada. We are thankful that they advocate for grants that will improve mobility safety and accessibility within our community.
In honor of Women's History Month, the Board of County Commissioners recognized exceptional women in Clark County. Commissioner Jones chose to honor Keely Brooks, President of the Southern Nevada Bicycle Coalition; Sandra Douglas Morgan, President of the Las Vegas Raiders; and Meggan Holzer, Rural Towns Liaison for Commission Districts C & F. Our community is a better, safer, and more resilient space thanks to their work. Clark County and District F appreciates them and all the women who work to make our community more resilient!

Today's University Medical Center began in 1931 as a humble, 20 room facility called the Clark County Indigent Hospital and operated with only one doctor and one nurse. In 1940, the hospital's name was changed to Clark County General Hospital when the first board of trustees was elected. In the 1950s, the hospital was renamed Southern Nevada Memorial Hospital. Finally, in 1986, the name was changed to University Medical Center of Southern Nevada to better reflect its role as a teaching institution and a medical center offering complete care.
With this week's unveiling of the renovation plans for the facility, let's look back at a couple of interesting articles about the hospital's past. The first article is from the front page of the September 27, 1940 Las Vegas Age newspaper. It includes a thank you letter to the Hospital Campaign Committee for the purchase of the first "invalid wheelchair" for the hospital. It was $49.95! The second article is from the November 8, 1940 issue of the Age announcing that a $3,500 contract had been awarded for a 1,200 square foot addition to the facility. The photo is from the 1950's and depicts the newly finished diagnostic out-patient building. The articles and photo are from the UNLV on-line digital archives. Click the thumbnails for a larger view.
