The Fourth Annual Dusk2Dawn campaign kicked off on November 4th. This annual event serves as a reminder to motorists to slow down and take extra caution, especially in the evening hours when pedestrians and other vulnerable road users are less visible. The event, a partnership between the Clark County Office of Traffic Safety, UNLV Traffic Safety Coalition, and Terrible Herbst helps raise awareness that December is the most dangerous month on our roadways with the switch to Daylight Standard Time. In fact, 80% of all pedestrian fatalities occur between dusk to dawn.
Speakers at the event included Suzan Smith, the mother of 12-year old Johnny, who was struck and killed by a car while crossing a local street just two years ago. "Motorists need to consider the impact on families from a deadly pedestrian crash which can be prevented by simply slowing down," Smith said.
According to the Nevada Department of Public Safety the total number of traffic deaths this year in Nevada has already reached 315 in October, including 188 in Clark County.

On November 3rd a long-awaited traffic light was activated on Durango and Badura. This light will help improve traffic safety in this area, improving the flow of traffic that has increased substantially as this area has grown. The intersection will soon see additional growth with the addition of Uncommons and Durango Station.
Also in November, Clark County was pleased to cohost a series of workshops alongside UNLV's financial aid and scholarships office on student loan forgiveness and debt relief. The objective was to help residents understand new programs put in place by the U.S. Government and to assist those with college debt.
Thanksgiving was celebrated a little early in District A at the West Flamingo Senior Center. The special event featured a pop-up market, luncheon, and live entertainment.
It was announced on Nov. 22nd that Clark County and District A's own Allegiant Stadium will play host to the 2028 Men's Final Four NCAA college basketball championship. Clark County continues to be a premier location for all world class tournaments. The event is expected to generate more than $100 million boost from the tournament.

The Clark County Fire Department would like to remind everyone that safety should be the number one priority this season. Cooking is the leading cause of home fires and injuries in the United States, so it’s important to be aware of potential dangers while preparing festive meals this year. Thanksgiving is the leading day of the year for cooking-related fires, followed by Christmas Day and Christmas Eve.
“The holidays are a fun and active time for families, especially in their kitchens where it may be easy to get distracted,” said Clark County Fire Department Chief John Steinbeck. “It’s important to never leave food cooking on a stove top unattended and to keep a safe distance from burners and hot foods or liquids. This is also a good time of year to make sure your household smoke detectors are in good working order in case of fire.”

Crash responders work tirelessly to save lives at traffic incident scenes and do this as safely and quickly as possible. Sadly, this dangerous work claims the life of nearly one first responder each week in the United States. Many more sustain life-altering injuries while responding to traffic accidents.
Every year in Nevada approximately 50,000 crashes are reported on our roads. Across America traffic incidents are the primary cause of death for police officers and emergency medical responders. To help keep drivers, incident victims and crash responders safe be extra cautious around traffic incidents. Slow down, be alert and watch for the unexpected. Proceed with caution as there may be many people on foot as well as debris in the road. If possible, move to the far lane when passing a vehicle(s) pulled over on the side of the road with lights on even if the situation looks calm - play it safe.
Remember, Nevada law requires drivers involved in minor, non-injury fender benders to safely move their vehicle out of the travel lanes when possible, helping reduce the chance of secondary crashes for themselves and other drivers.
