Dear District G Residents,

With the 4th of July right around the corner, I hope you are able to celebrate safely while having a fun time with your friends and families.  It goes without saying that fire danger is a recurring issue this time of year and fireworks only add to the problem. We have some information in this month's newsletter about fireworks safety. To learn more, click here.

Henderson and Boulder City are both holding July 4th events - see below for more information on where and when.

The 1 October Memorial Committee is working hard to include public input into the planning of the 1 October Memorial.  Check out this newsletter to find out how to submit your suggestions.

Dog Vaccination Event

Clark County Museum Storage Facility

I was honored to host the Grand Opening of the Clark County Museum‘s new storage facility. I was thrilled to see Mark Hall-Patton attend as he was very instrumental in the preservation of many items. The Museum has over 1 million artifacts to store. One of its goals is to utilize this new facility to store the collection of over 22,000 items from the One October tragedy, along with articles from the Howard W. Cannon Aviation Museum at Reid International Airport and the Searchlight Historic Museum. The Clark County Museum is located at 1830 South Boulder Highway in Henderson and is open daily from 9:00am – 4:30pm.

Wetlands Park Nature Play Corner Grand Opening

We recently cut the ribbon at the new Nature Play Corner at Wetlands Park.  The one-acre site was built to engage play in a natural environment. Themed play structures and interpretive signs will hep connect families with nature and encourage discovery.  Thank you to Sister Robert Joseph Bailey Elementary School for bringing over 90 kids to celebrate the grand opening and experience the new Nature Play Corner. A big thank you to PinkBox Doughnuts for providing delicious treats for the kids.

1 October Memorial: We Need Your Input

Clark County’s 1 October Memorial Committee is reaching a critical phase in the creation of a lasting memorial that remembers the victims of the 1 October 2017 shooting, honors the survivors and first responders, and recognizes the resilience of our community. If you have an idea for what a memorial should look like, now is the time to share it! You (and anyone you know who may be interested) are invited to submit drawings, artwork, short videos, songs, poems or other digital forms of design along with a letter of intent that describes the idea or feelings the item is meant to convey. More details about this effort (and other pathways for participation) may be found on the 1 October Memorial Committee’s website at https://ClarkCountyNV.gov/1OctoberMemorial.

Submissions for Creative Expressions are being accepted through September 30. If you have questions about how to get involved in the process, the 1 October Memorial Committee is hosting two general information outreach sessions on July 7 (10 a.m.) and July 11 (4 p.m.) at the Clark County Government Center. Both sessions are open to virtual and in-person attendees. You can register to attend today via the website or app.

We encourage you to tell friends and share information about this effort on social media. Participation is welcome from anyone who was affected by the tragedy in any way, including those who live outside our area.  Our hashtag is #1OctoberMemorial. We also have graphics and fliers available for public use on our website. The design teams that compete to build the memorial as part of the next phase of this process will be expected to review all Creative Expressions submissions received from the public. They may draw upon your idea as they develop their proposals to present to our community next year. They also may ask artists to join their design teams. Fight The Bite: Green Pools & Mosquito Season

With the onset of mosquito season in Southern Nevada, the public can help eliminate the blight and health dangers of green pools by reporting them to local code enforcement agencies. If located in unincorporated Clark County, call (702) 455-4191 or file a complaint through the County website at www.ClarkCountyNV.gov/FixIt.    Green pools are pools that have been neglected for so long that their water has turned green from algae and bacteria. Green pools, ponds and other standing bodies of water can become breeding grounds for mosquitos, which can carry serious diseases such as the West Nile and Zika viruses. Last year the County responded to 168 complaints about green pools. Mosquito activity tends to increase in Southern Nevada during the hotter months but varies year to year. Seasonal efforts to eliminate green pools provide fewer opportunities for mosquitos to breed which can lower the risk for mosquito-borne illnesses. In 2019, the Health District reported 43 cases of West Nile virus in the County; one case was reported in 2020; and none were reported in 2021. Health officials say even small amounts of standing water can support mosquito breeding. Tips to “fight the bite” are on the Health District’s website at www.southernnevadahealthdistrict.org. Suggestions include: Avoid spending time outdoors when mosquitos are most active, notably at dawn and dusk. When outdoors, use insect repellants containing DEET, Picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Wear pants and long-sleeved shirts when outdoors and spray repellent on clothes and exposed skin. Make sure doors and window have tight-fitting screens without tears or holes.

A Slice of Summer

On Friday, June 17th, we kicked off Father’s Day weekend with a community event at Paradise Recreation Center. Over 200 neighbors came out and enjoyed free and delicious food from Abuela’s Tacos, inflatable bounce houses, carnival games, a mechanical bull and more.  As always, many thanks to Metro's South Central Area Command for coming out and supporting the event.

Whitney Recreation Center, located at 5712 E. Missouri Avenue (East Tropicana and Boulder Highway), strives each month to provide fun, educational, relevant and interesting activities and field trips for our District G kids, families and seniors. Free Skating at Lifeguard Arena

Beat the heat, and get on the ice! The City of Henderson and Lifeguard Arena are teaming up to offer free public skate to our community on select dates this summer. Skaters of all ages and experience levels are welcome!

• Wednesday, July 6 from noon to 2pm 
• Friday, July 15 from noon to 2pm
• Monday, July 18 from 1pm to 3pm 
• Saturday, July 30 from 10am to noon
• Monday, August 1 from noon to 2pm

Registration is required in order to participate. Skate rentals are $3 and available for purchase after you check in. Please visit lifeguardarena.com/open-skate for facility rules and regulations.

Green Valley Library Reopened on June 2!

Remodel features the first time an Employ NV Career Hub and Employ NV Business Hub will operate side-by-side 

Community and civic leaders kicked off the opening of the new and improved Green Valley Library after an extensive renovation. 

Originally constructed in 1986, the Green Valley Library is located at 2797 N. Green Valley Pkwy. The recent transformation includes renovations to support expanded community services through partnerships, remodeling the children’s restrooms, interior and exterior painting, new flooring, and additional interior and exterior improvements to the building. 

The modernized Green Valley Library now better serves the community's evolving needs by adding more flexible space where patrons can gather and access free wifi, computers, technology, in addition to employment, educational and children's programs.  Approximately 10,000 square feet of space was evaluated and subsequently remodeled. 

The remodel includes an impressive 3,500 square feet dedicated to helping job seekers and employers.  The existing One-Stop Career Center has been reimagined into a larger Employ NV Career Hub with six computer stations and staff that can assist community members with resumes, training, and employment opportunities at no cost. A new Employ NV Business Hub focuses on the needs of local businesses, bringing together state and federal resources such as no-cost talent recruitment and financial incentives for hiring and training Nevadans. The business hub also offers a conference area and state-of-the-art office technology. 

The two hubs represent partnerships between multiple entities, including the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR), the Nevada Department of Business and Industry, and Workforce Connections, the local workforce development board. 

Friends of Henderson Libraries, a 501c3 organization that fundraises for Henderson Libraries through events and book sales, also has an expanded footprint as part of the renovation.

One Book - One Henderson Community Read Continues...

Be sure to stop by Henderson Libraries and get your copy of the One Book - One Henderson Community Read selection, The Island of Sea Women by bestselling author Lisa See. Copies are available at Henderson Libraries locations or through the downloadable ebook and audiobook services through Libby/OverDrive. These July events will tie in with the book and its story of friendship:

On July 27 at 6:00 p.m., the event will conclude with a special virtual author visit with Lisa See. You can either watch from home via Zoom or attend the watch party at the Paseo Verde Library with others who have also read the book.
