Our annual Pickleball Tournament was held at Sunset Park early last month. We had over 250 tournament participants this year and we plan to expand next year to include even more players, including kids! With the help of the Southern Nevada Pickleball Association, Tony Spurlin and Excel Pickleball and Mario Najera, we can offer league play, clinics and instruction for all ages. If you are interested in learning how to play or reserve courts, contact our SPORTS Division at (702) 455-8241.
We had such a great time celebrating the graduation of our Paradise Rec Center Class of 2022 pre-schoolers! The kids were dressed to the nines and had lots of fun on their special day.
Assemblywoman Venicia Considine and myself co-hosted a Free Mother's Day Community Event, Wellness at Whitney, at Whitney Recreation Center. We distributed free boxes of food and fresh produce, and several non-profit organizations were on hand to provide community resources such as Legal Aid assistance, Affordable Housing information, Insurance and Medical Program information, Voter Registration, and much more. We were treated to the sounds of the talented Del Sol High School Folklorico students. Many thanks to the organizations that participated and of course, the Whitney Rec staff for their hard work in arranging the event.
The winner of the Mojave Max Contest and classmates who attend Hinman Elementary in District G enjoyed a day at the Springs Preserve, including a train ride around the property, a Meet & Greet with Max, a Q & A session with a zoologist, a pizza lunch, a tour exhibit and a prize presentation!

The use of illegal fireworks in neighborhoods over the Fourth of July holiday has been such a growing problem in the Las Vegas Valley that Clark County and partnering agencies are asking for the public’s help and cooperation to address.
Fireworks labeled “safe and sane” are the only type of consumer fireworks allowed in Clark County and only from June 28 through July 4 each year when nonprofit groups are allowed to sell them for fundraising purposes at locally licensed and inspected stands. Residents who want to see large fireworks displays are encouraged to enjoy professional shows hosted at various venues around the community with oversight from area jurisdictions.
Officials caution that even approved “safe and sane” fireworks can cause fires and injuries and should only be used with adult supervision. Additionally, no fireworks of any kind, even the “safe and sane” type, are allowed in local parks or on public lands in the region including Mount Charleston, Lake Mead and Red Rock Canyon. Fires are a year-round concern in Southern Nevada.
Starting this year, offenders caught using illegal fireworks in Clark County will face an increased minimum fine of $500, up from $250. The Nevada State Legislature authorized the County to increase the fines for illegal fireworks during the 2021 session. The legislation allows for fines of up to $10,000 for large amounts of illegal fireworks found within the community.
For many local students, school is not out for the summer so please be sure to exercise additional caution as you drive through school zones and crosswalks and drive the school speed limits posted and when the school flashers are activated.
Many children are expanding their academic and social opportunities this summer. Motorists are advised to watch for children near schools and to obey traffic signals and signage.
School zones are in effect at area schools this summer to assist students safely cross streets while they are attending the Clark County School District’s (CCSD) Summer Acceleration Program. Summer school is in session May 31 through June 17 and June 23 through July 19.
All Clark County schools are offering summer classes five days a week for six hours. CCSD is tailoring this offering to support student learning and social-emotional well-being. Approximately 10 high schools across CCSD will also host Secondary Summer School for middle and high school students for credit retrieval options and first-time course enrollment.
