APRIL 2022
The highly anticipated opening of Echo Trail Park was a success. Located on the corner of Russell Rd. and Buffalo Dr., Echo Trail Park's grand opening celebration took place Saturday, March 26.
The Park opening garnered support from local organizations and businesses; The Broken Spectacles from the Blind Center of Nevada performed for guests, YourPanadas—a delicious local food truck—served visitors, and Prevail Marketplace brought multiple vendors from their farmer's market. Echo Trail Park was named in 2021 by a local high school student who won the park's naming competition. When asked, "Why 'Echo?'" she explained it was because, much like our community after a couple challenging years—echoes bounce back.

With the County's newly developed Office of Traffic Safety up and running, Commissioner Naft and Director of Traffic Safety Andrew Bennett are diligently working to advocate for traffic-safety education, crash prevention, better engineering, enforcement, and equity for all road users. On Friday, March 25, both Commissioner Naft and Andrew joined Director of the Road Equity Alliance Project Erin Breen, to unveil a "Sacred Shoes" plaque at the southeast corner of Sahara and Eastern and kick-off the Sacred Shoes campaign.
The mission of Sacred Shoes is to raise pedestrian awareness of the dangers surrounding unsafe traffic practices and reckless driving. A pair of white shoes, which are placed near the plaques, are to remind drivers that the spot where they drive is "sacred" ground, as someone lost their life on the road.
Each memorial plaque is labeled with a number, and individuals interested in learning more about the project or about the accident that occurred at the spot can go to the Clark County website and type in the number to discover more.
On March 1, to kick-off Women's History Month, Commissioner Naft recognized three women, each instrumental in the success of our community. Thank you to Searchlight Historian Jane Overy, Deputy Fire Chief Jennifer Wyatt, and Senior Deputy Fire Chief Kelly Blackmon for their participation and dedication to Clark County.
During the March 15 Commission meeting, Commissioner Naft led a St. Patrick's Day recognition. The recognition included a performance from the Black Donnelly's (who can often be found playing at Rí Rá in District A) and a visit from former Commissioner Larry Brown.
On Monday, March 21, Commissioner Naft attended the groundbreaking of LVMPD's new K-9 Command Center. With land donated by South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa, the new facility will include kennels, a training area, and act as the K-9 Section's headquarters.
Commissioner Naft presented keys to the Strip to entertainment moguls Simon Cowell and Howie Mandel, for their work and contributions to the Las Vegas entertainment industry.

"Safe and Sane" Fireworks
Since fires are year-round concern in Southern Nevada’s dry climate, officials are asking the public to remember the local rules regarding fireworks.
The inter-agency “You Light It, We Write It” campaign, www.YouLightItWeWriteIt.Vegas, will be active again this year over the July Fourth holiday. Clark County and local police and fire departments launched the effort to raise awareness about the problem of illegal fireworks over the holiday and to encourage the public’s support in only using approved “safe and sane” fireworks. Fireworks labeled “safe and sane” are the only type of consumer fireworks allowed in Clark County and only from June 28 through July 4 each year when nonprofit groups are allowed to sell them for fundraising purposes at locally licensed and inspected stands.

Water and Swim Safety
With the arrival of spring, swimming pool season has officially arrived in Clark County, and officials are reminding the public to keep careful watch over children to prevent water-related injuries and drownings. You can download your "Water Watcher" pledge card here.
Clark County also offers swimming lessons year-round at the Aquatic Springs indoor pool and Desert Breeze and Hollywood Aquatic centers. Lessons are available for children as young as 6 months to adults. Online registration for the first session of summer swim lessons is set to open on Thursday, May 26, via the pool/aquatic pages of the County’s Parks and Recreation Department website here.
If you are already a skilled swimmer, Clark County pools and aquatic facilities are recruiting part-time lifeguards, water safety instructors and other staff for summer jobs. Interested candidates must be age 15 ½ and older and can submit applications online through the Parks and Recreation Department’s Aquatics Program here.
