Last month, Team Jones celebrated women in District F, Clark County, Nevada, the United States, and beyond. Women’s History Month provided us with an opportunity to reflect on the importance of elevating the voices of those who identify as women, and of supporting their success across all aspects of life, including in higher education and their chosen careers. COVID-19 certainly amplified many of the inequities that women continue to navigate. With that, during the Board of County Commissioners meeting, Commissioner Jones honored three women in District F for their contributions to our Clark County community.
Latoya Holman has spent her life advocating for marginalized communities in the United States. Latoya is a founding member of the Human Rights Campaign Las Vegas, currently serves as a member of the National Board of Governors and is a member of the National Executive Committee for HRC, lending her voice as a proud African-American ally and advocate to the Equality Movement. She also serves as the Director of Community Outreach for the LVMPD Foundation, which fundraises to support the fallen officers fund, advanced training for our officers, and community safety programs aimed at reducing crime and strengthening the relationship between the community and our police officers.
Yvette Williams has spent most of her life giving back to the community as a community organizer and activist, advocating on public policy issues impacting education, families, jobs/economy, and criminal justice reforms. Yvette serves as Chair of the Spring Valley Township Advisory Board, advocating for District F residents. Yvette is also the Chair and founder of the Clark County Black Caucus, where members in the Clark County community have a forum to discuss policy issues impacting the African American community in Nevada.
Amy Dockter-Rozar serves as principal of West Career and Technical Academy since 2013, advancing the magnet school to its nomination for the “Exemplary High Performing Schools” category as a 2020 National Blue Ribbon School by the Nevada Department of Education. She also is working on getting her Executive Doctorate in Educational Administration while simultaneously juggling work and serving as Vice President of the Administration Division of the National Council for Technical Education and has served on national high school Accreditation Review teams since 2014. Amy has worked tirelessly for District F families and students, and for the broader education community.

The District F Resident of the Month is Dr. Phan Nguyen in recognition of the impacts he has made within the AAPI community and District F. In collaboration with the Tzu Chi Internal Medicine Association, Touro University, and the Asian American Group, Dr. Nguyen has brought vaccinations to thousands of hard to reach people in District F. The team has focused on providing care for those who are disables, the elderly, and those who are immunocompromised. Nurses/volunteers at the vaccination events spoke Tagalog, Chinese, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Korean, and other East Asian languages making services even more accessible. Dr. Nguyen is also working with a team of volunteers from Tzu Chi’s Las Vegas branch to raise funds for dental and vision equipment, so they may serve more people and children in need. Thank you, Dr. Nguyen for your contributions to the District F community.

Those were the words of Commissioner Jones as he invited people to get out and play basketball after months of empty courts. The process of putting basketball rims back up at the Parks and Recreation facilities all around Clark County began on March 30th. The go-ahead was in accordance with the new directive on sports that went into effect that day. Parks crews started at Sunset Park and then worked diligently to make sure every basketball court was ready for people to get out and enjoy the great weather. With over 100 parks in the County it was quite a task!

A new pedestrian bridge near Desert Oasis High School opened to residents this week. The new bridge aims to provide students living in the southern Mountain’s Edge community a safer and more direct way to travel over the railroad tracks and to school. It also is part of the regional bike trails system, connecting neighboring communities. “This new bridge connects the high school to the neighborhoods on the other side of the railroad tracks, making it easier and safer for the students who will use it every day,” said Commissioner Justin Jones in a statement. “The bridge is also a great addition to the regional network of bike paths as it provides cyclists with a key connection between the Southern Highlands and Mountain’s Edge communities.”

Through the hard work of the Clark County Fire Department, the Sandy Valley Volunteer Fire Department, Southern Nevada Health District, and FEMA, Sandy Valley and Goodsprings residents were able to get COVID vaccinations in their community. A total of 125 vaccines were administered. At some points during the clinic residents had to wait in line for awhile - but they were all appreciative that they didn't have to make the 2 hour roundtrip journey into Las Vegas to get their shot.
