November 2020
Greetings! As the holiday season approaches, we are all looking forward to gathering with family and friends. But as we know, 2020 is just a different year. With COVID-19 levels at their highest level and increasing rapidly, health officials are strongly recommending we take extra precautions, including limiting the size of gatherings and being vigilant about wearing a mask around others. Together, I know that we will get through this!
As always, please feel free to contact me and my team by phone at (702) 455-3500 or by email at ccdistf@clarkcountynv.gov. You can also follow me @JustinJonesNV on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to keep up with the latest events in the District.

West Career & Technical Academy was one of 3 CCSD schools recognized this year by The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program. Since 1982, the program has recognized over 9,000 school across the US for the hard work of students, educators, families, and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging and engaging content. Commissioner Jones presented a proclamation and donuts to the principal and faculty on October 8th in recognition of this outstanding achievement. Congratulations West Tech!
Hundreds of residents joined Commissioner Jones at the ballot drop off event at Mountain's Edge Park on Friday, October 23rd. Not only were participants able to safely and securely place their ballots in the ballot box, they were also able to get flu shots, and enjoy some dinner from a food truck. But, the most entertaining part of the event was the great voting instruction video made by Commissioner Jones and his staff.
A ground breaking ceremony was held to kick off the construction of Fort Apache Professional Park. Located on Fort Apache Road just South of Sunset, the 50,000-square-foot medical/office project will be constructed on 5 acres. The project will consist of six buildings containing spaces from 4,100 to 14,300 square feet. Three buildings have already been leased and/or purchased. |

Rural communities throughout Clark County, and in countless communities across the country, are served by volunteer firefighters. These volunteers respond to fires, car wrecks, medical calls, and many other types of emergency situations at all times of day and night. They all give freely of their time and energy, and that is especially true of the Chiefs of these departments. Kenneth Moultray, Chief of Blue Diamond, Station 80 passed away last month. He gave 42 years of service to Clark County Fire Department's Rural Division with 37 years of those as Chief. Ken was a legend with not only the Rural crews he worked with, but with the Urban suppression crews, and more than a few career firefighters got their start in Blue Diamond. He was larger than life and had a smile and a kind word for everyone he met. Thank you, Chief, for all you did for Blue Diamond and all of Clark County.

On October 14th, Commissioner Jones celebrated the grand opening of the playground at Cougar Creek Park. The playground had been completed in March, but had not been accessible due to COVID-19. A group of enthusiastic youngsters wasted no time in exploring the play equipment after the Commissioner cut the ribbon. In addition to the playground, Cougar Creek offers great amenities including picnic areas, pickleball courts, fitness equipment, rock/net climbing, and an archeological dig area. The park is located on the south side of Wigwam between Rainbow and Torrey Pines.

In the 1950's and early 60's, the Sands Hotel hosted an annual Turkey Trot event where kids could attempt to catch live turkeys to take home for Thanksgiving dinner. After one of these events, a memo was sent by the Sands' Public Relations firm to newspaper throughout the country sharing the following story.
Turkey Turns Tables...Here's one Gobbler that's not going down on the Thanksgiving Dinner table without one last good kick - or peck - and 3-year old Troy Pritchard of Las Vegas, Nevada ought to remember this Thanksgiving for a long time. Troy and his sister Tracy, 4, were trying to capture a live turkey in the annual "Turkey Trot" held by the Sands Hotel in Vegas when they suddenly found themselves being chased by this gobbler right into the hotel's pool area. Troy made the mistake of slowing down when he spotted the photographer - and a moment later Mr. Gobbler proved that at Thanksgiving time, its not always the turkey that gets it in the end!
The incident described in the lower left photos. Sands co-owner Jake Freedman is the man in the top right photo below. Many more photos can be found at the UNLV Digital Collections online.
