September 2020
Hello Friends! After such a hot summer, it is a relief to finally look forward to some cooler weather – I know I’m excited to get outdoors more. We are blessed with so many amazing natural spaces in Southern Nevada, from the Clark County Wetlands Park to Spring Mountain Ranch to Valley of Fire. With the cooler weather, let’s all commit this month to explore somewhere new. I’ll be checking out the petroglyphs at Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area, just a few minutes away near Henderson. How about you?

On any given day, there are more than 3,000 children involved in Clark County’s foster care system. Most of the children simply need a place to reside temporarily before they are returned to their biological families. For those children who can’t return home, adoption provides them with a permanent family to call their own. Foster and adoptive parents are a valuable resource for children, their biological families, and the entire community.
Learn more on how you can get involved with our foster youth by signing up for a no-obligation, virtual foster care information session. To learn more or to sign up, visit countmein.vegas
If you are interested in supporting our kids but foster care might not be for you, visit countmein.vegas for 10 ways that you can get involved!

With the election less than 3 months away, it is important to know how and where to vote to ensure that your voice is heard. This year you have more options for voting than ever. Every active registered voter in Clark County will receive a mail ballot that can be mailed in or dropped off at many convenient locations. If you prefer to vote in person, early voting will take place from October 17-30 at 35 sites around the valley. Or, you can vote in person at your polling place on Election Day. The Clark County Election Department has put together several informational flyers that are available on their page of the Clark County website. |
Want to meet new people, serve your community, and get paid, too? Then you might be interested in becoming a polling place worker for the 2020 election. The Election Department has an urgent need for workers throughout Clark County. There are a wide variety of positions available. No prior election experience is required - all training and/or training materials will be provided. Click here or on the graphic to the right for more information. |

It is with a heavy heart that we recognize our colleague and friend Peter Umoh as the resident of the month for September. Peter passed away on August 10, 2020 after a courageous battle with COVID-19. Throughout his tenure with Real Property Management Peter guided the development of over 75 projects in Clark County as a Project Manager. Most noteworthy in District F, the $18 million Desert Diamonds Baseball Complex at Mountains Edge which received rave reviews from players and coaches across the country. While Peter was a consummate professional who embodied Clark County values of integrity and accountability, it was the respect he showed colleagues, customers, and companions that made him special. Not to mention his beaming smile, sense of humor, gracious interaction style, and generosity. There was always a rock star aura when seen by Peter in the hallway or job site. Not that Peter acted like a rock star but rather that is how he made others feel. While Peter was a dedicated professional, respected by peers across the country, he was much more than a Project Manager and Architect.
Born in Nigeria, Peter remained dedicated to his country of origin until his passing. Peter was Head of Community Outreach for the African Diaspora of Las Vegas and a former President of the Nigerian Association of Las Vegas. True to his nature until the end, Peter facilitated food relief for his village Mbioto ll during his final days in the hospital. Peter was a proud father who is survived by his children Enobong, Ema-Abasi and Edidiong. Peter’s generosity, goodwill and kindness touched the lives of people from Africa to America. District F is a better place because of our friend Peter James Umoh who was tragically taken from us too early but will never be forgotten.

Some of the most common questions that District F receives are about speed bumps. How can I get speed bumps in my neighborhood? Don't speed bumps slow down traffic and increase safety?
Clark County does not use or allow speed humps/bumps on public maintained roadways within the unincorporated areas of Clark County. While speed bumps do offer some benefits, the disadvantages are numerous and many of them are listed below.
- Fire, Ambulance, and Police service response times are increased with each speed bump
- Speed bumps result in Increased noise, increased vehicle emissions, and increased speed between the humps as drivers attempt to make up time
- Motorists may drive on sidewalks, through yards, or even onto other less-traveled streets to avoid the speed humps
- Speed bumps interfere with street repaving and maintenance, may affect drainage, and can cause flooding problems
- Speed bumps conflict with school and transit bus operations and present a hazard to bicyclists and motorcyclists
Clark County uses other methods to address speeding within neighborhoods. Radar Speed Trailers can be scheduled to be placed in 25 miles per hour speed limit areas to assist with educating motorists of the posted speed. Clark County also has a traffic calming program that is neighborhood driven to find ways to address these types of issues in neighborhoods.

Since it first opened in 1913, the Goodsprings School has provided a one-room schoolhouse education for the children in the Goodsprings community - and that has not changed this year. As the 2020-2021 school year approached, schools in rural Clark County were given several options as to how they would operate this fall. Tati Hadavi, the principal of the Sandy Valley and Goodsprings schools sought the input of his staff. The decision of the Goodsprings school staff was unanimous - they wanted to come back to school full-time and in-person. With social distancing, sanitizing, and other safety measures in place, the students in Goodsprings are going to school as they have done for over 100 years.

As the days begin to get a little bit cooler as we head into fall, it is a great time to get out and do a little hiking and exploring. A great family-friendly destination is the Historical Railroad Trail near Boulder City. The easy and relatively level trail takes you through 5 old railroad tunnels that are approximately 300 feet in length and 25 feet in diameter. The trail follows the elevated railroad bed that is the only remaining section of the Hoover Dam Railroad. The railroad was used to transport cement to the site for the construction of the Dam. Nine steam locomotives, four gas locomotives, and 71 people were used to operate the system. As you move along the trail, you can see big, rusty pieces of metal that are remnants of the railroad as well as panoramic views of Lake Mead and the surrounding landscape. Also, be on the lookout for wildlife including lizards, birds, bats, and ground squirrels. It is 2.2 miles to get through all 5 tunnels (for a total round-trip distance of 4.4 miles) – but you can make the hike as long or short as you would like. If you are feeling really adventurous, you can continue past the last tunnel to the Dam and back for a total of 7.5 miles.
To get there, head out of Boulder City towards Hoover Dam on US Hwy 93. Turn left on Lake Shore Rd. (before you get to the Hacienda). Go past the entrance to the Alan Bible Visitor’s Center, the trailhead parking area will be on your right. The whole trail is pretty exposed and can be hotter than Las Vegas, so be sure to wear sunscreen and carry plenty of water.
