On November 11th, we come together to honor and thank the Veterans who have served our country. Their dedication, discipline, and willingness to answer the call to serve are acts of courage that continue to shape our communities and our shared future.
Veterans remind us what it means to show up for one another. Their service reflects a deep belief in community and in the responsibility we share to protect and support our neighbors. Today we acknowledge their sacrifices, their continued presence among us, and the many ways they help shape a more compassionate and resilient Santa Fe County.
In Santa Fe County, approximately 7,000 veterans, or about 6% of our adult population, call this community home. Data shows that nearly one in four local veterans lives with a disability, and close to one in five experiences some form of housing or financial instability. Mental health and suicide prevention remain urgent priorities. Statewide, veterans represent roughly 20% of suicide deaths in New Mexico, underscoring the need for continued access to counseling, crisis services, and peer support. Many veterans also face economic challenges after service, as they balance fixed incomes with the rising cost of housing and healthcare. Yet our veterans continue to contribute through civic leadership, volunteerism, and mentorship that strengthens our social fabric.
As your County Commissioner, I remain committed to supporting efforts that ensure veterans feel valued in our community and receive the support they deserve. This includes encouraging collaboration between local organizations, listening to the needs of veterans and their families, and uplifting opportunities for connection and care.
To every Veteran, and to the families who have supported their service, thank you!
Your sacrifices and contributions are seen and held in gratitude today and every day.
