It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Florence Jaramillo, beloved owner of Rancho de Chimayó and a true icon of Northern New Mexico.
Affectionately known as "Mrs. J" to her customers, friends, family, and staff, Florence was recognized as a Culinary Treasure by the State of New Mexico. Her legacy is woven into the very fabric of our region - a legacy of tradition, hospitality, and excellence.
Born Florence Poulin in Hartford, Connecticut, she came to New Mexico after marrying Chimayó native Arturo Jaramillo. Together, in 1965, they opened Rancho de Chimayó in Arturo’s restored ancestral family home, using recipes perfected over generations. What began as a humble, family-rooted venture blossomed into one of New Mexico’s most beloved and historic dining destinations.
Mrs. J became legendary for her original gastronomic creations, warm hospitality, and her pivotal role in bringing New Mexican cuisine to the international stage. Her influence reached far beyond the kitchen — she was named New Mexico Restaurateur of the Year in 1987, served on both the New Mexico and National Restaurant Association boards, and received the National Restaurant Association's Lifetime Achievement Award, its highest honor. She also held the distinguished title of Honorary Colonel in the U.S. Air Force.
Her unwavering commitment to her community, culture, and craft made her a treasured figure in Santa Fe County District 1 and beyond. Florence Jaramillo’s passing is a profound loss, but her spirit and legacy will continue to live on in every dish served at Rancho de Chimayó and in the hearts of all who knew and admired her.
I am honored to have been able to work with Mrs. J. over the last few years. She showed love and passion for the Chimayó community's heritage. She nourished the community not only through food, but in dedication to the community's arts, culture, economic development and giving so many people their first job on paths to success.
We extend our deepest condolences to her family, loved ones, and the many whose lives she touched. Mrs. J was a role model for so many Norteños, she will be missed.
May Mrs. J rest in peace — and may her light continue to shine in the traditions she helped preserve.
