January 2020 Newsletter:
A Focus on Education
|
The Santa Fe Community College School of Trades, Advanced Technologies and Sustainability is leading the way in innovative solutions for food and fuel. The Controlled Environmental Agriculture and Sustainable Technologies programs ended December 2019 with an exciting tour of their new 10,000 square foot greenhouse facility and biofuels laboratory. The facility produces vibrant food and culinary herbs for the campus Food Services and Culinary Arts program using aquaponics and hydroponics. On the left, Charlie Shultz, Lead Faculty of the Controlled Environmental Agriculture Program and student, enthusiastically share the 20 pound tilapia raised in the tanks. If you haven't been, do go and check it out. Or better yet, sign up for a spring semester class!

The Santa Fe Indian School promotes social equity and sustainability in their interactive and community-based curriculum. Since 2001, their Agriscience program, originally funded by NASA, has prepared dynamic leaders to include cultural shifts and sustainable practices for a more resiient future. The applied curriculum incorporates today's technology with traditional farming methods and requires all seniors to present a final research project. SFIS's student-led Green Team keep green practices as an embedded focus in the curriculum and campus life.
|
High schools in Santa Fe are also preparing students for a changed future with curriculum focusing on public engagement and community education. Santa Fe Prep held a student led Santa Fe Climate Forum in December 2019 that was well attended by parents, interested community members, local sustainability leaders, and students. Prep students presented posters on worldwide natural disasters and breakout groups focused upon ways to take action locally.
Santa Fe Public Schools is expanding opportunities at the Early College Opportunity (ECO) facilities on the south campus of Santa Fe High School to include hands on learning opportunities in sustainable construction, controlled environment agriculture, and other green trade skills.

What Can I Do? 2020 Vision - Spread the Word and Practice Action!
We are all educators starting at home: Spread the sustainability culture and get the entire family involved! As evidenced by the age old wisdom of modeling behaviors and practice, beginning with one's self; leading by example is the quickest way to make a difference and ignite long-lasting change for the children and adults around us. Therefore, teaching the first lesson of sustainable practices and culture at home, in real time practice every day, is an important starting place for all ages.
