ASK FCHS
We are excited to welcome questions from our readers on nutrition, fitness, and wellness and will highlight a monthly Q&A in this new column every month.
Question:
Can you provide tips on getting a good night sleep?
Answer:
With daylight saving scheduled for Sunday, March 9th, the time adjustment can throw off your sleep schedule. Here are tips to help you adjust smoothly:
Before the Time Change
-
Gradually adjust your schedule: Go to bed 15-30 minutes earlier (for spring forward) or later (for fall back) each night for a few days before the switch.
-
Get more morning sunlight: Exposure to natural light in the morning helps regulate your body clock.
-
Limit evening light exposure: Reduce screen time and bright lights before bed to help your body prepare for sleep.
-
Maintain a consistent routine: Keep your sleep and wake times as consistent as possible to help your body adjust.
After the Time Change
-
Stick to your schedule: Even if you are tired, try to wake up and go to bed at the same time each day to reset your internal clock.
-
Get moving: Exercise, especially in the morning, can help your body adjust to the new time.
-
Avoid caffeine & alcohol before bed: These can disrupt sleep, making adjusting harder.
-
Take short naps if needed: A 20-30-minute nap can help combat fatigue without ruining your nighttime sleep.
-
Be patient: Your body may take a few days to adjust fully, so give yourself grace and prioritize good sleep habits.
