NJOHSP Observes Rise in Reports Related to Government Services and Facilities Sector
Accompanying a national increase in high-visibility attacks targeting elected officials, NJOHSP has seen an uptick in reporting within the Government Services and Facilities Sector, indicating national events may be inspiring individuals to make similar plots and threats in New Jersey. In 2025, extremists who subscribed to a variety of ideologies, targeted government personnel, elected officials, and other figures representing government. This sector also includes physical buildings owned or leased by any level of government.
On February 17, U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) arrested Carter Camacho, 18, of Georgia, after he ran toward the U.S. Capitol building armed with a loaded 12-gauge shotgun and wearing a tactical vest and gloves. Camacho followed police instructions to drop his weapon and lie on the ground. Additional rounds of ammunition were found attached to the shotgun. During a subsequent search of his vehicle, which was parked near the U.S. Botanic Garden, authorities discovered a Kevlar helmet and gas mask inside the vehicle, and a knife on the ground along Camacho's path.
The USCP continues to investigate the incident to determine a motive, although Camacho allegedly said he was "just there to talk to a Member of Congress."
The arrest occurred just one week before President Donald Trump delivered his State of the Union address on February 24.
