Summer Programs at the New Jersey State Museum

This summer, beat the heat and head to the New Jersey State Museum for fun, free activities on weekdays, all summer long. Beginning July 5 and continuing through August 30, the Museum will offer a variety of activities for both adults and children. The complete listing of scheduled programs is available on the Museum website. Each weekday will have a different program:

  • Tuesdays from 12 to 2 p.m., stop at the activity cart set up in one of the galleries. Visitors of all ages can explore art, history and science with interactive games, touchable objects and simple arts and crafts.
  • Wednesdays between 1 and 3 p.m., visit the Imagination Studio on the Museum’s lower level for a make-and-take craft. The crafts are suitable for all ages, offering families and individuals a fun opportunity to be creative.
  • Thursday mornings, the Museum will offer story time in the Discovery Den for the youngest (ages 6 months – 5 years) visitors. Following the story, participants can make a simple craft. This program is offered in two sessions, at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m.
  • Fridays between 12 and 2 p.m., interact with a Museum Docent to learn more about the Museum’s galleries. Tours are informal and guests can join at any time. It’s a great lunch time break, and each week will feature a different gallery.

*The New Jersey State Museum is open Tuesday - Sunday, 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.; closed on all State holidays. General admission is free.

"Y' Art" Sale

Shop the Arts Council of Princeton's Y ART sale for creative bargains and unique finds, all handcrafted by local artisans. This flea-market style event will be held outdoors in the ACP parking lot and around the Paul Robeson Center for the Arts in Downtown Princeton. 

Working in ceramics, jewelry, printmaking, painting, and more, 30+ vendors will sell seconds, misprints, discontinued designs, and one-of-a-kind items at studio clean-out prices!

There is a small admission fee of $5 to help cover costs*, but once inside, the philosophy is “take what you’ll use and pay what you can.”

With the help of Propagate Studio, West Windsor Arts Council has an awesome Art Supply Thrift Shop where everything is take what you’ll use and pay what you can. They reached out to the community for donations, and received all kinds of goodies. Don’t worry, everything has been inspected, cleaned, and quality tested. Imagine all the fun, art making supplies you will discover and get to bring home!

Propagate Studio has saved hundreds of pounds of supplies from the landfill since they began 2022, diverting over 375 pounds of supplies during their recent pop-up sale! West Windsor Arts Council is thrilled to do this for the community.

Voices Chorale NJ Summer Sing and Auditions

Voices Chorale New Jersey invites all singers to join them for an open summer sing featuring selections from their 2024-2025 repertoire, including excerpts from the Requiems by Mozart and Brazilian composer José Maurício Nunes Garcia, who was the first to conduct the Mozart in Brazil and who also modeled his own Requiem on Mozart's.

Scores will be provided, and light refreshments and ice cream will be served. It’s an opportunity to sing both well-loved and new music, meet the director, Dr. David
A. McConnell, and learn some fascinating history and context about the compositions.
Meet other singers and consider setting up an audition to join the group!

Outwater’s Militia Encampment 

Washington Crossing State Park - Visitors Center Museum, Titusville

Outwater’s Militia (A reenactment group, portraying a Revolutionary War militia unit) will be encamped at Washington Crossing State Park, New Jersey, on Saturday, August 3. Come and see the men of Outwater’s Militia join together and drill in preparation for action against His Majesty’s troops. Stroll through the encampment when the men are not drilling and learn about the life and times of the Revolutionary War.

Honey Harvest

With the hives open and the bees on their best behavior, the Howell Farm beekeeper invites visitors to look inside the supers and meet the worker bees! Next, you can help uncap and extract this year’s crop of clover honey from the combs, then have a taste and bottle some to take home.

Potato Harvest

Grab a bushel basket and follow behind the potato plow as workhorses Bill and Jesse unearth rows of potatoes for picking! Visitors of all ages can help collect, clean, and sort the crop, which will be delivered to local soup kitchens and food pantries. A few potatoes travel by wheelbarrow up to the barnyard, where farmers wash, slice, and drop them into the kettle to make potato chips for tasting.

Canning Day

Visit Howell Farm this Saturday to learn the ins and outs of canning… and help us prepare and “put up” summer produce for use in the fall and winter months. We’ll be using equipment you can get at the store—and also showing off some of our antiques—so you’ll know the process whether you’re using modern Mason jars or some antiques from Grandma’s cellar.

Fiddlin' on the Farm

Now in its 36th year, the contest is the largest and longest-running traditional fiddle contest in New Jersey. Visitors can expect to find fiddlers, guitarists, mandolinists and more perched on porches, tucked under trees, and spread out on the lawn playing traditional folk and bluegrass music...and sharing the stories of their historic instruments.

The 41st Annual Howell Farm Plowing Match

This plowing kicks off a 10-month growing season for Howell Farm’s fall crops: wheat, rye, barley, and the old-fashioned “bearded wheat” known as spelt. There’s a lot of work to be done between now and planting in late September...but luckily the neighbors are here to help out!

Halloween Play Auditions

The West Windsor Branch of the Mercer County Library Youth Services Department will be holding open auditions for teens ages 12-18 for four new plays written by librarian Michael Kerr for our Halloween Playfest: “The Stay-Behinds;” “Words Will Never Hurt Me;” “Backstage;” and “The Life of the Party.” Auditions will consist of readings from the scripts. Scripts will be available for inspection at the reference desk, or can be sent by e-mail. Online registration for auditions is recommended, but walk-ins are also welcome. Rehearsals will begin in early September. The performances will take place from October 25th to 27th. The library also welcomes help with makeup, costumes, and set construction.
