Celebrating Black History Month!

I’m excited to invite you to our celebration of Black History Month next week on Thursday, February 22nd. The event will be a celebration of the important role that higher education has played in empowering the Black community.

During Black History Month, we particularly recognize the accomplishments of Black Americans and their heroic struggle for civil rights, which continues to this day. Here in Mercer County we are fortunate to inherit a rich legacy of Black history. Black Mercer residents have made, and continue to make, indispensable contributions to our shared community.  From pioneering Black abolitionist William Lambert, to New Jersey’s first Black Assembly Speaker Rev. S Howard Woodson, from famed actor and activist Paul Robeson to feminist playwright and poet Ntozake Shange, Mercer County’s Black community has produced leaders in every walk of life.

Today, Black leaders are tackling some of the greatest challenges in the world of higher education. Students of color continue to face structural challenges as they pursue degrees in higher education, facing a greater student debt burden and lower completion rates. On Friday we will hear from speakers who are working to dismantle these barriers and build a more just and equitable world.

Best,
