Slavery At Morven

Morven Museum
55 Stockton Street, Princeton
(609) 924-8144 | morven.org

Please visit Morven's online exhibition highlighting the history of slavery at Morven.

The topic of human beings being treated as property is a difficult one and we aim to address it with the appropriate gravitas. Morven Museum & Garden's mission is to preserve our legacy by sharing its authentic stories. By not shying away from our story of enslaved people, we believe our visitors will have a better understanding of how our world evolved to where we are today. Much of this information has been available on our gallery walls, and in this format we can deepen the viewer's understanding by linking to source material. Research into the men, women, and children enslaved by the Stockton’s at Morven is ongoing and this site will be updated as new information is discovered.

EXHIBITIONS

NOW - APRIL 29
Painting The Moon & Beyond

Trenton City Museum at Ellarslie
Cadwalader Park, Trenton
(609) 989-1191 | ellarslie.org

Presenting an exhibition of paintings by New Jersey native and revered American landscape painter Lois Dodd and artists who have long been a part of her life. Dodd, 94, a co-founder of the legendary artist-run Tanager Gallery, has, for more than 70 years, painted her surroundings —New York’s Lower East Side, rural Mid-Coast Maine, and the Delaware Water Gap. Among her favorite subjects -- and the central theme of the exhibition -- is the night sky.

Together with painting colleagues and former students Jeff Epstein, Dan Finaldi, and Elizabeth O’Reilly, Lois Dodd has ventured out on summer nights to paint. In addition to the nocturnes, “Painting the Moon and Beyond” will look through windows and doors and at portraits the artists have made of each other, including one by painter Mel Leipzig of Trenton. It was Leipzig who introduced Epstein to Dodd, and Dodd who introduced Finaldi to Leipzig.

A pioneering woman artist, Dodd has been the subject of more than 50 solo exhibitions since 1954, a time when female artists didn’t receive the opportunity and recognition of their male counterparts. Her work is in the collections of the Bowdoin College Museum of Art, the Colby College Museum of Art, the Farnsworth Art Museum, and the Portland Art Museum, among others. “Painting the Moon and Beyond” comes on the 25-year anniversary of a retrospective of Dodd’s work at The Trenton City Museum.

“Painting the Moon and Beyond: Lois Dodd and Friends Explore the Night Sky” will be accompanied by a short film and a catalog. Stay tuned for more information on programs to take place over the course of the exhibition.

TOWERS: Holding On

Artworks Trenton
19 Everett Alley, Trenton
(609) 394-9436 | artworkstrenton.org

Opening Reception: Feb. 5, 6-8pm

"These are family photos — intimate moments caught on film of the people who loom large over Edwin’s life. Torres. Towers. Like you, I am an outsider invited to observe. These are the photos he has chosen to show us to preserve the memory of his family. They are honest moments, not the kind typically broadcast for public consumption, but the kind that take root in our foundation and form a family’s history. I study the subjects to better know the artist: their faces, expressions, posture, surroundings. Their story is one of courage, migration, loss, joy, pain, perseverance, and triumph. It is set in Puerto Rico and the Bronx, NY. The protagonists are strong, full of life, flawed, but admirable."
- Joanne Torres

The OK Trenton Project

Passage Theatre Company
205 East Front St., Trenton
(609) 392-0766 | passagetheatre.org

Five years ago, a group of Trenton students spent their summer creating a sculpture entitled “Helping Hands.”  They learned the skills necessary to build something out of nothing with the promise of their work being publicly displayed in their community.  Four days after installation, the sculpture was removed due to anonymous complaints that the piece too closely resembled a gang symbol.

Based on a true story and composed of verbatim interviews from those directly involved, The OK Trenton Project is an experience that explores the role art plays in our community and the consequences we face when it’s taken away.
