In April 2020 the Lawrence Headquarters Branch of the Mercer County Library System will be hosting its 11th annual TrashedArt Contest. The contest celebrates Earth Day by encouraging patrons to turn ordinary trash into extraordinary art. The contest is limited to one entry per artist. Classes or groups may participate only if they register ahead of time by calling 609-883-8292 or e-mailing jcuddahy@mcl.org. The library will accept artwork no earlier than Wednesday, March 18, and no later than Wednesday, March 25. Selected artwork will be on display throughout the month of April, beginning on Wednesday, April 1. Students in grades 7-12 and adults who reside in Mercer County are eligible to participate. Entries must be original artwork, no larger than 3 feet by 3 feet by 3 feet and no heavier than 25 pounds. Any art medium is acceptable, so long as a minimum of 75 percent recycled content is used. Some examples of recycled content include metals, paper, rubber, glass (but no sharp shards), plastic and cloth. The criteria for recycled materials is anything that has been manufactured and would have otherwise been thrown away. Non-recyclable materials such as glue, paint, tape, etc. are permitted. Suggestions include newspapers, fabric from old clothing, machine parts, and used building materials. For the purposes of this contest, natural materials such as rocks, dirt, bones and sticks are not considered recycled. Contest entry forms are available at the Lawrence Headquarters Branch Reference Desk, as well as on the Lawrence Headquarters Branch page of the Mercer County Library System website. All accepted art entries will be publicly displayed at the Lawrence Headquarters Branch of the Mercer County Library System, located at 2751 Brunswick Pike, Lawrenceville, New Jersey. Entries will be judged, and winners will be notified by phone or email. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place in both adult and student categories. A reception will be held on Wednesday, April 15, at 7 p.m. to honor the winners and the participants. An array of quilting styles and color schemes will fill our first-floor galleries with African American artistry, creativity, and storytelling. The Friendly Quilters of Bucks County and Princeton Sankofa Stitchers Modern Quilt Guild keep the traditions of quilt-making alive with works of art that tell stories and strengthen historical and community bonds. The exhibit will feature workshops and lectures on the history and traditions of quilts in the African American community.
