AUGUST 2 - 29 Art Exhibit
Mercer County Library, Lawrence Headquarters Branch 2751 Brunswick Pike, Lawrence 609-883-8294 | mcl.org A special art exhibit is planned for the Sculpture and Painting classes of the Lawrence Township Senior Center during the month of August 2019. The exhibit will be held at the Lawrence Headquarters Branch of the Mercer County Library System, and will open on Friday, August 2 and end on Thursday, August 29. The library is located at 2751 Brunswick Pike (Route 1) in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, at the corner of Route 1 and Darrah Lane. An artists reception is planned for Saturday, August 3, from 2 to 4 pm. The show will include paintings, watercolors and sculpture from the art classes of the Senior Center under the instruction of Leslie Siegel, Steve Vannier and the late Teresa Prashad. The event is dedicated to the memory of Teresa Prashad — artist, teacher and highly respected member of the local arts community.

Join us for August featured artist Julie Harris' impactful exhibit Warrior Women. Harris' large scale series springs from her diagnosis of bi-lateral breast cancer and mirrors the staggering statistic that 1-8 women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. Exhibit curator Aine Mickey comments, "Viewers will be confronted with the unique haunting familiarity of Julie Harris' creations. Her use of texture, color and natural forms expresses an intimate message of courage, pain and human resilience."

Presented by Luke Boyd, public historian, actor, and museum professional. When many think of adventure and exploration, exotic locations and ancient civilizations may come to mind. However, urban exploration, or “UrbEx,” can happen in our backyards. There’s a lot that can be learned from uninhibited and abandoned landscape. In this session, through case studies from the tristate area, participants will examine abandoned properties and the narratives that accompany them. In this lecture rock historian Vincent Bruno will focus on the phenomenal rise of the British pop and rock acts that invaded our shores in the 1960s – from pop groups (The Beatles, The Dave Clark 5, The Animals, The Kinks) to the psychedelic and progressive bands (The Who, Pink Floyd, Cream, Traffic). He will explore highlights from landmark recordings that clearly defined this British pop renaissance era. This journey will also include aspects of British popular culture (cinema, fashion, TV and UK underground) whose influence added to the impact of this remarkable decade. Registration is suggested.
