Happy Wednesday, Maplewood. Last week marked a historic moment for Maplewood Township as Niheema Malloy was sworn in as the first woman to serve as Chief of Police in our community’s history. Our Township Committee also honored Columbia High School Class of 2020 graduate Simone Kelly last Tuesday at their biweekly meeting. PSE&G GAS LINE REPLACEMENT
Starting Monday, August 3, Public Service Electric & Gas (PSE&G) will begin BPU-mandated work converting low gas pressure lines to high pressure lines in sections 2 & 3 of Maplewood (see map). Streets that will be affected should be getting notification letters from PSE&G, outlining expectations for the work. The first areas affected in the next 2 weeks will be:
- 8/3 to 8/7: Brookwood Drive between Woodside Road and Elmwood Ave
- 8/6 to 8/12: Meadowbrook Road between Elmwood Ave and Laurel Ave
- 8/12 to 8/14: Tiffany Place between Meadowbrook Road and Franklin Terrace

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT
Join Maplewood Police Dept. & Maplewood Health Dept. on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, from 6-9 p.m. in Maplecrest Park for their annual National Night Out. This fun, free event will have food, DJ, giveaways, entertainment & games.
Curious how National Night Out began? This annual event comes together in towns across the U.S. annually on the first Tuesday in August to promote police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie.
The goal was to make neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live, and bring back a true sense of community by bringing police and neighbors together under positive circumstances. Read more about the history of the event here.

MAPLEWOOD LIBRARY'S ONLINE HISTORICAL ARCHIVES

LIBRARY CARD DESIGN CONTEST
Memorial Library is celebrating their one year anniversary with a community-wide library card design contest! Winning designs (announced the week of September 7) will be featured as official, limited edition Maplewood Library cards. How cool is that?
The library is accepting submissions across three age categories: Children, Teen (middle and high school), and Adult. Each category will have one winning design selected by the Maplewood Arts Council.
All entries must be submitted by midnight on August 2nd. Late submissions will not be accepted. For full submission guidelines & the form to enter, head to their website.

FREE DENTAL SERVICES & KIDS VACCINES
This August, families are invited to take advantage of two health services for children 18 and under at our new Maplewood Health & Community Support Center (129 Boyden Ave.).
On August 10, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., join us at our Mobile Dental Screening provided by Zufall Health. You must register in advance with Eddy Melo at 973-325-2266 ext.1040 or email him at emelo@zufallhealth.org.
On August 13, we are partnering with Essex County Office of Public Health Management for a free vaccines for children clinic from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Vaccines are available by appointment only - to schedule yours, call 973-877-8456.

BROADWAY IN THE PARK: LET’S ROCK!
Join us on Monday, September 7 (Labor Day) at 4:30pm at the Memorial Park Amphitheater in Maplewood for New Jersey's biggest celebration of Broadway!
Returning for its 5th year, this free outdoor concert features a star-studded cast of local Broadway performers singing Broadway's biggest pop and rock hits from the 1950s to today.
Admission is free, with a suggested $15 donation to support SOMA Stage's mission of bringing Broadway to your backyard. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy an unforgettable afternoon of live Broadway music with family and friends!

MAPLEWOOD SUMMER STREETS
There's nothing quite like September weather, and Maplewood Village Alliance plans to make the most of it with their annual Summer Streets. Join your friends & neighbors down in the village on Saturday nights between August 29 to October 3, when we shut the streets to traffic to eat al fresco, listen to live music (bands usually go on between 5:30-8), and enjoy a little extended hours for shopping.
  FARMERS MARKET: Just a reminder our Maplewood Farmers Market is open every Monday, 2-7 p.m, by the Springfield Gazebo.
NJHOMES ABC: The New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA) announced 31 municipalities selected to participate in the first cohort of the New Jersey Housing Opportunities for Municipal Equity and Success (NJHOMES) Affordable Building Club (ABC), and Maplewood, NJ is one of them! STREET ADDRESS NUMBERS: Did you know? For public safety reasons, Maplewood Township requires the conspicuous placement of street address numbers on all buildings in the township of Maplewood. Ordinance 2999-20, which outlines this Township requirement, is intended to assist police, fire and ambulance personnel in locating destinations to which they are called with more precise accuracy than GPS, allowing first responders to spot locations faster.
LEAF BLOWERS: As a reminder, Maplewood, NJ has a year-round ban on gas-powered leaf blowers. You can help keep our neighborhoods quieter & cleaner by following Maplewood's leaf blower rules: ❌ The use of gas-powered leaf blowers, except a turbo blower, is prohibited within the Township of Maplewood. ✅ Electric and battery-powered blowers are okay year-round, though you’ll need to do it during these hours: Mon–Fri: 7 AM–6 PM / Sat: 9 AM–5 PM / Sun: Not permitted ✅ Turbo (also called "Buffalo" or “Turbine”) blowers are permitted May 1–Sept. 30: Mon–Fri: 7 AM–6 PM / Sat: 7 AM–3 PM / Sun: 9 AM–3 PM.
