A NOTE FROM THE TOWNSHIP ON OUR RAINBOW CROSSWALK
In 2018, Maplewood was proud to install a rainbow crosswalk at the intersection of Valley Street and Oakview Avenue to celebrate and honor diversity and inclusion within the community. Unfortunately, the crosswalk was temporarily removed yesterday as part of Essex County’s ongoing intersection improvements along Valley Street. The County has informed us they are required to install a standard crosswalk at this intersection in order to meet project requirements – but as we did seven years ago, Maplewood Township fully intends to work with Eseex County to reinstall our beloved rainbow crosswalk as soon as the County permits in 2026.
WOODLAND RESTORATION GRANT
With the help of a new state preservation grant awarded on September 25, Maplewood’s historic building, The Woodland (60 Woodland Road), is getting a restoration starting in 2026. The Township of Maplewood was awarded a grant of $702,850 for The Woodland from the New Jersey Historic Trust, as part of a state-wide initiative to save and promote historic sites throughout New Jersey. The grant will be used for work in The Woodland’s Great Hall, including structural upgrades in the roof, restoration of wood doors and sidelights, removal of aluminum siding and trim, and revealing of the windows (shown here in photo from 1930) above the side doorways. Pickups are done on a rotating basis curbside (click here for a printable map & schedule) - and residents are also permitted to drop their leaves off at our DPW yard (359 Boyden Ave.).
