news head 4

Good afternoon, Maplewood! Read on for a roundup of this week's Township news & don't forget to follow us on Instagram & Facebook.

FROM THE TOWNSHIP

Help us spread the news, Maplewood: this is NOT junk mail. This flier may be arriving via snail mail from New Jersey American Water (NJAW) to your mailbox this week if NJAW is unsure of your pipes. The flier outlines 2 critical next steps that NJAW wants you & your neighbors to take advantage of now so they can expedite their replacing of lead pipes throughout Maplewood in 2025. To read more about this NJAW project, head to our dedicated web page. As outlined in the flier, your to-do list is: 1) Schedule Your Appt. with Montana Construction at 201-232-7624 or 2) Self-identify the material of your service line at www.njamwaterlslr.com/inventory.

DEPT. OF PUBLIC WORKS

Everyone loves a good yard day. Well, DPW does anyway. Our town's annual Spring Rake Out begins next month, on Wednesday April 23, 2025. Details about what you can add & how to package them below.

SPRING RAKEOUTSPRING RAKEOUT

In Maplewood Township, no one is allowed to remove a tree with a caliper of 12 inches or more without obtaining a permit from the DPW, regardless of the tree’s condition. All trees removed must be replaced with the equal number of trees or donate $375 per tree removed to a tree fund. Visit us on our tree removal page at DPW online or visit 359 Boyden Ave. for a copy of the permit application. If you have any questions, please contact 973-762-1175, ext. 2.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

Please remember that the use of gas-powered leaf blowers is prohibited in Maplewood, for any purpose: landscapers, tree-cutters, roofers, pest-control entities, residents – everyone.

Lawn Signs - Please note, Lawn signs are permitted only on your property. They are not permitted on the grass strip between the sidewalk and the street. Lawn signs on the grass strip will be picked up and disposed of by our team.

Bulk Garbage - Remember, Bulk garbage items are only permitted at the curb the day before your scheduled bulk pick up time. Bulk garbage pick-up is coordinated through your garbage service. While the Township has two bulk drop-off days per year, the Department of Public Works does not offer pick up of any bulk items at any time.  More information about Township bulk drop-off days can be found on our website.

New Procedure Alert! Landscapers and tree-cutting contractors must register their businesses at the Department of Public Works (DPW), 359 Boyden Avenue. Registration and applications related to landscaping and tree permits will no longer be accepted at Town Hall. The DPW is the Department that issues permits for landscaping and tree work in Town, so this should streamline the permit process.

Summer is for swimming pools and will be here before you know it! Remember: any swimming pool deeper than 24”, whether it’s permanent or temporary, requires a permit. Also, make sure you follow the laws about securing your swimming pool to keep everyone safe. More information can be found on the Township zoning page or by contacting the Zoning Officer at 973-762-8120, ext. 5602.
