Help Available for Those Affected by Tropical Storm Ida

Tropical storm

FEMA Assistance: As a result of damages from Tropical Storm Ida, Governor Murphy has secured a Major Disaster Declaration from FEMA for Bergen, Essex, Gloucester, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Morris, Passaic, Somerset, Union, and Warren counties.  Residents of those 12 counties are eligible for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs designed to help people and business owners recover. Before applying, you should gather photos of your damaged home and belongings, make a list of damaged/lost items, and, if you have insurance, first file a claim with your insurance company. Then visit FEMA’s disaster assistance page and enter your city or ZIP code into the address lookup to begin the 20-minute application process.

Unemployment Benefits: Disaster Unemployment Assistance is available to individuals who lost their jobs directly due to the disaster, who are otherwise ineligible for regular unemployment insurance benefits, and who live in any of the 12 counties included in the Major Disaster Declaration, listed above. Learn more about available benefits and how to apply from the NJ Department of Labor.

Housing for Displaced Residents: New Jerseyans displaced from their homes across the State are encouraged to use the New Jersey Housing Resource Center to quickly find transitional or long-term housing. The online housing locator is available to help people in search of housing and to landlords who are looking to provide housing. Find housing or list available properties with the New Jersey Housing Resource Center.

Additional Resources: Visit NJ 211’s Tropical Storm Ida page for other recovery resources, including information about cleanup assistance, food assistance, and support services that can help you navigate application processes related to your recovery.

Time for Your Flu Shot!

Flu shot

Everyone six months of age and older is encouraged to get a flu vaccine every year. September and October are ideal times to be vaccinated against the flu.

It is likely that flu viruses and the virus that causes COVID-19 will both be spreading this fall and winter, making it more important than ever to get a flu vaccine. It is the best way to protect yourself and others – especially those who are particularly vulnerable to both COVID-19 and influenza such as older adults and those with chronic health conditions.

Flu vaccines and COVID-19 vaccines may be given at the same time.
