AG Platkin and DEP Commissioner LaTourette Announce Historic Settlement of Up to $450 Million with 3M for Statewide PFAS Contamination
On May 13th, New Jersey Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin and Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Shawn M. LaTourette announced a landmark settlement of up to $450 million with 3M to resolve the State’s 2019 lawsuits and a Statewide Directive to address damage to the State’s water and other natural resources from dangerous chemicals known as PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), also commonly referred to as “forever chemicals.” The proposed settlement resolves 3M’s liability in the State’s lawsuits regarding the Chambers Works site, located in Pennsville and Carneys Point, and Parlin site in Sayreville, and the DEP’s Statewide PFAS Directive, all initiated in 2019. The settlement will also resolve the State’s claims against 3M in the statewide litigation regarding PFAS in the firefighting material known as aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF). The damages recovered from 3M will help fund New Jersey’s nation-leading PFAS abatement efforts, improve drinking water quality in Salem County and statewide, and restore injured natural resources. NJEDA Announces More than $4.3M to Support Green Economy Workforce
The New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) recently approved four applications under the NJ Green Workforce Training Grant Challenge, totaling over $4.3 million in funding. The awardees will develop training programs that prepare New Jersey residents for green economy careers, with a particular focus on serving overburdened communities. Training programs will highlight a range of critical skills and industry certifications in solar energy installation, green stormwater infrastructure, weatherization and building systems, and vehicle electrification assistance. Through these grants, the selected organizations will help expand access to essential workforce training opportunities, supporting sustainable economies and creating good-paying jobs in overburdened communities. Funding and Technical Assistance Opportunities
In case you missed it, see below for opportunities that provide funding and assistance for projects related to green infrastructure, climate change, healthy communities, and more.
NJ Fleet Advisor Fleet Electrification Assistance Program
Applications are now open for the second round of the New Jersey Fleet Advisor (NJFA) program! New Jersey Fleet Advisor will provide technical assistance to 15 fleets interested in learning how to transition to zero-emission vehicles. Participating fleets will receive a personalized Fleet Electrification Roadmap document that reviews vehicle recommendations, cost projections, on-site electric infrastructure assessments, and other key information to support the transition to zero-emission alternatives. The program will help to reduce administrative burdens for fleet decisionmakers, expand access to resources and technical information, and help facilitate clean energy transition throughout the state. Public, private, and non-profit entities, including school districts, are eligible to apply.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Lean more online.
Water Quality Improvement and Planning Grants
NJDEP's Water Quality Restoration Grant Program provides funding for local governments, nonprofit organizations, higher education institutions and others to carry out water quality improvement projects and develop watershed-based plans that protect the ecological health of New Jersey's waterways and increase local flood storage. The grants will also fund programs that are making communities more resilient to extreme weather through nature-based solutions, addressing emerging contaminants, and implementing green infrastructure. Projects that may be eligible for funding include the installation of living shorelines, storm basin retrofits, construction of green infrastructure such as rain gardens and pervious paving systems, and the implementation of approved watershed-based plans that reduce nonpoint source pollution. This funding will benefit communities in addressing contaminated waterways, updating infrastructure, and improving climate resilience.
Project Proposals are due June 2nd, 2025. Learn more online.

All New Jersey residents, regardless of income, race, ethnicity, color, or national origin, have a right to live, work, and recreate in a clean and healthy environment. Historically, New Jersey’s low-income communities and communities of color face a disproportionately high number of environmental and public health stressors and, as a result, suffer from increased adverse health effects. New Jersey seeks to correct these outcomes by furthering the promise of environmental justice.
DEP’s Office of Environmental Justice (OEJ) aims to improve the quality of life in New Jersey’s most vulnerable communities by educating and empowering communities who are often outside of government decision-making processes and guiding DEP’s programs and other state departments and agencies in implementing environmental justice.
