North Dakota Ranks 6th on the Index of
State Economic Momentum
Each quarter the State Policy Reports (S/P/R) releases the Index of State Economic Momentum, which ranks states based upon year over year change in personal income, employment, and population. The national average is established at zero, with each state's score shown as a percentage above or below the national average. North Dakota jumped from second to last place in overall ranking seen in December 2024 to 6th place in December 2025.
The rankings for North Dakota in the three categories are:
- Personal Income – 3rd with 6.5 % growth, national average is 4.7 %
- Employment – 31st with 0.4 % growth, national average is 0.7 %
- Population – 14th with 0.8 % growth, national average is 0.5 %
