Deepfake, Deep Trouble: Watch Out for AI-Generated Scams
This month’s cyber tip involves artificial intelligence (AI)-powered impersonation, and it’s more convincing than ever. Cybercriminals are using deepfake voice and video technology to impersonate government officials. Their goal? To trick you into clicking a malicious link and handing over your personal data.
Here’s how the scam works:
- You receive a text or call from someone claiming to be a government official.
- The scammer tries to build trust, sounding genuine, friendly and authoritative.
- They send a link to “download” or “connect,” but clicking it infects your device or allows the attacker to steal your data.
Here are ways to protect yourself:
- Stay skeptical of unfamiliar contacts.
- If someone you don’t know tries to get personal quickly, especially claiming to be an important figure, verify their identity.
- Don’t click strange links.
- If you didn’t ask for it, don’t click it. Even if it looks official, it could lead to malware or phishing sites.
Real government officials won’t contact you through messaging apps or ask you to download anything. When in doubt, report it as phishing and ignore it. Stay safe!
