Celebrating Our Colleagues

Five Deputies Receive Lifesaver Award

Sheriff’s Office Deputies Receive Lifesaver Award

Congratulations to Sgt. Corey Williams, Deputy Sarah Tucker, Deputy Luke McWhorter, Deputy Nicholas La Sala, and Deputy Ian Barclay (Sheriff's Office) for receiving the Lifesaver Award!

On Sunday, May 4, they were enjoying breakfast at Stack’s Restaurant in Waxhaw when they were alerted that a 78-year-old man was choking. The man was visibly struggling to breathe, and the deputies immediately jumped into action.

Gold Awards for Workplace Safety

Luke Farley, the N.C. Labor Commissioner, presents the Gold Awards for Safety to Union County staff.

For the tenth consecutive year, Union County has earned the North Carolina Department of Labor's Gold Award for outstanding workplace safety. Union County Water earned its sixth consecutive award, while Union County Parks & Recreation won the award for the first year.

N.C. Commissioner of Labor Luke Farley presented the awards to Union County staff. The NCDOL Safety Awards Program recognizes employers across the state who demonstrate a strong commitment to accident prevention and maintaining a safe, healthful workplace.

These awards are a credit to all employees - because everyone has a role to play in contributing to a safe workplace - and particularly to the Security Risk Management Team for leading our workplace safety efforts. Read more about these awards on our website.

National Safety Month

National Safety Month

June is National Safety Month, and it's a time to reflect on how we can make our homes and workplaces safer. This is our final weekly safety message from our Security Risk Management team for the month. Thank you for following along for workplace safety tips.

National Safety Month | Week 4: Wellbeing

What comes to mind when you think of workplace safety? For many, it’s hard hats, machine guards, and hazard signs. But what about grief, stress or fatigue? These can also be hazards that affect our ability to work safely.

Workplace wellbeing is about more than just wellness programs or fitness challenges. It creates environments where employees thrive physically, mentally and emotionally. It recognizes that workplaces can be critical in protecting or putting people at risk.

Here are a few ways we can begin addressing wellbeing-related risks:

  • Acknowledging human limits: None of us operate at 100% all the time.
  • Treat wellbeing like any other risk by identifying and prioritizing related risks.
  • Partner across departments: Collaborate with the Security Risk Management team while seeking feedback from frontline workers.

Surprise Military Homecoming at Government Center

Surprise Military Homecoming at Government Center

Union County is a proud employer of veterans and supporter of military families. Steven Stack (Building Code Enforcement) had been counting the days since he last saw his daughter Summer, currently serving in the U.S. Navy as a hospital corpsman. With a little help from her dad's coworkers, Summer was able to pull off the perfect surprise homecoming, just a few days after Father’s Day. Watch the heartwarming moment this proud dad and his brave daughter were reunited here at Union County Government on Facebook or YouTube.
