Burn Ban Lifted

Union County Fire Marshal Jon Williams lifted a local burn ban following the North Carolina Forest Service’s decision to end the statewide burn ban implemented on March 21, 2025.

With the burn ban lifted, residents may resume open burning where permitted; however, fire officials urge the community to continue prioritizing safety when burning outdoors. For more information on open burning regulations and to obtain a burn permit, visit our burning regulations webpage.

Elderly & Disabled Exclusion Tax Relief Program

Qualified seniors or people living with disabilities can apply to save money on their property taxes through the Elderly or Disabled Exclusion Property Tax Relief Program. You must:

  • Be at least 65 years old (as of Jan. 1)

  • Be totally and permanently disabled - no age requirement (as of Jan. 1)

  • Live on the property

  • Have an income of $37,900 or less from the previous year

Career Fair for Teaching & Non-Teaching Positions

Union County Public Schools is hosting a career fair on April 12, from 9-11 a.m. at Weddington High School to hire for various positions, including secondary math and science teachers, support staff, and more. Attendees can meet current staff, apply for jobs, and participate in onsite interviews. Prospective attendees can preregister online and view available positions on the UCPS careers webpage.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month

Every April, our staff commemorates Child Abuse Prevention Month by placing blue pinwheels and wearing blue to raise awareness. Child abuse and neglect are preventable, and communities thrive when families receive the support they need. Familiarize yourself with the signs of abuse and neglect, offer support to families in need, and report any suspected cases to the proper authorities.

Upcoming Rabies Vaccination Clinic

Furry animals - rabies vaccine

Union County will host a low-cost Rabies Vaccine Clinic at Union County Human Services, 2330 Concord Ave., Monroe, on Saturday, April 19 & May 17, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

  • Vaccinations are $10, cash only.

  • Microchips will be available for $20 each.

Plus, pick up free mosquito larvicide.

Farmer's Market is Back! 

The Farmer's Market opens this Saturday, April 5, 8 a.m. to noon offering locally grown produce and handmade goods. It's a chance for local farmers, artisans, and small businesses to connect with the community.

Community Tree Planting

TreesUnion, a nonprofit dedicated to improving our tree canopy in Union County, is hosting a community tree planting at Dickerson Park on Saturday, April 5, at 8:30 a.m. Bring shovels, rakes, a wheelbarrow, and gloves if you have them.
