Children's Area to Reopen in March at Main Library

The children's area at the Main Library in Monroe is reopening after renovations! The new room is swinging open its doors on Saturday, March 1 with a celebration featuring books and activities inspired by Mac Barnett, the National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature. Expect a day packed with scavenger hunts, crafty creations, and fabulous giveaways galore!

Union County Senior Social Worker Amanda Shelton was honored with the winter 2024 Caught in the Act Award for her efforts during inclement weather to ensure that a child experiencing foster care received appropriate care before, during and after a critical surgery. Read more about her efforts.

Union County's 4-H Counselor-in-Training Program is looking for motivated teens to assist with its Summer Fun camps. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop teamwork, communication and mentorship skills. Limited spots are available - apply online before April 1!

Black History Month Game Night

Head on over to the Main Library Griffin Room on Friday, Feb. 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. for a game night for adults featuring Spades, Dominoes and Phase 10 while discovering the roots of early African American games.

Discover the Joy of Fishing!

Join us at the Southwest Regional Library on Saturday, Feb. 22, from 11 a.m. to noon for "The Lure of Fishing." Dive into the world of fishing with hands-on practice in tying lures and learning the best fishing techniques. A Union County Parks and Recreation representative will also guide you on how to obtain your fishing license.

Family Support Awareness Month

Parenting isn't easy! Union County's Parenting Support program helps parents gain a better understanding of their children and how to best support them. To qualify for the program, parents and caregivers need to live in Union County and have a child age 0-5 who is not yet in kindergarten.

Know the Signs of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Kerosene heaters should not be used to heat indoor spaces, as they emit gases that reduce the amount of oxygen in the air and increase the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

The most common symptoms of CO poisoning are:

  • headache

  • dizziness

  • weakness

  • upset stomach

  • vomiting

  • chest pain

  • confusion
