Rise in Pertussis Cases

Union County has seen a rise in pertussis (whooping cough) cases, especially among school-aged children. Pertussis is a highly contagious respiratory illness that can lead to severe health risks, particularly for infants and young children. Learn about symptoms and treatment.

Prevent the Spread of Seasonal Respiratory Illness

To keep yourself and your family safe throughout the holiday season, here are some steps to prevent the spread of influenza (flu), COVID-19, pertussis, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV):

  • Vaccinations are your best defense against a range of respiratory illnesses.

  • Regularly wash your hands.

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces.

  • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and then discard the tissue promptly.

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick, and if you are sick, limit your contact with others.

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month

Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States for both men and women. Annual lung cancer screenings are advised for adults at high risk who have a history of smoking 20 or more packs a year, are currently smoking or quit within the last 15 years, and are between the ages of 50 and 80. The best way to prevent lung cancer is to never start smoking or to quit if you currently smoke.

Participate in the Great American Smokeout on Nov. 21 and join thousands nationwide taking a significant step towards healthier living. Learn more about how you can get involved.

Open Burning

With leaves falling, don't forget about open burning regulations! Always burn safely by staying with the fire, keeping it 25 feet away from structures, and never using gasoline, kerosene, or diesel fuel. Prevent injury and property damage by following state laws.
