Union County Government Donates Proceeds from Historic Roof Tile Sale to Local Nonprofit for Preservation Efforts

Union County leaders donate funds to Carolinas Genealogical Society

Union County Government is donating proceeds from surplus sales of original slate roof tiles from the historic courthouse to The Carolinas Genealogical Society, a nonprofit dedicated to the promotion and preservation of county history. The total =of $4,365 was collected over 17 months, as community members had an opportunity to purchase original slate roof tiles from the iconic historic courthouse in downtown Monroe for only $5. The County sold 873 roof tiles at the Government Center, Monroe Library and Cane Creek Park.

In 2021, the historic Union County Courthouse underwent a roof replacement, leaving the County with hundreds of original slate roof tiles from 1886.

Caught in the Act of the Year Award & Lifesaver Award

Join us in congratulating two employees for receiving prestigious awards for their heroic acts: Jamal Gardner (Social Services) received the 2023 Caught in the Act of the Year Award, and Deputy Fire Marshal John W. Helms III received the Lifesaver Award.

Jamal Gardner Receives Caught in the Act of the Year

Jamal's guidance and thoughtful actions deterred a student from running away from school. Jamal kept the student safe and enabled the student to better process their feelings.

John was at a local restaurant with his family when he noticed a man experiencing a medical emergency. John called 911 and performed CPR until the first responders arrived.
