Cybersecurity Monthly Tip

Securely Dispose of Your Devices and Hard Drives

When it's time to part ways with your old devices like phones, tablets, computers, and other digital storage devices, safeguarding your personal data is crucial. To ensure no one can access your sensitive information, follow these simple steps for secure disposal:

  1. Backup Your Data: Always store all your data on another device or a trusted cloud service. This step is essential to protect and preserve your valuable information.
  2. Wipe Your Data: Use a reliable software tool or perform a factory reset to entirely erase your data from the device. Depending on the device, consider performing the wipe multiple times to ensure complete removal of data.
  3. Physically Destroy Storage: If the device still contains data after a factory reset or if it's too old to be wiped, physically destroy the device's storage. This step ensures no data can be recovered from the device.
  4. Recycle Responsibly: Choose to recycle your device at an electronics recycling center that specializes in destroying data or at a reputable retailer. This responsible disposal method contributes to environmental sustainability while prioritizing data security.

By following these fundamental steps, you can confidently and safely dispose of your old devices and hard drives, thereby protecting your privacy and enhancing your overall security.
