Early Voting Underway

Early Voting

Early voting for the Nov. 7, 2023, Municipal Elections is now underway at the Monroe Library. The last day to vote early is Saturday, Nov. 4.

The Monroe Library is the only early voting location for Municipal Elections. Early voting hours are 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4, which is the only weekend day for early voting.

Union County residents who are not registered to vote can register at the early voting site during the early voting period. Click here to read more.

New County Commissioner Appointed

J.R. Rowell

J.R. Rowell has been appointed to fill the vacancy on the Union County Board of Commissioners created by the passing of Chairman Stony D. Rushing. Rowell is a Union County native and served as Clerk of Superior Court for 16 years before retiring last fall. 

Be Principal for a Day

Wednesday, Nov. 15, 8 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Business and community members are invited to spend a day as the boss, learning about school administration, meeting students and teachers, and making a real impact on education. Principal for a Day is an exclusive and free opportunity to shadow one of the 53 Union County Public Schools exceptional principals and learn the realities of being a Principal, build a relationship, and leverage your personal and business resources for the benefit of children.

Apprenticeship Summit

Free and Open to Businesses of All Kinds

South Piedmont Community College will host an Apprenticeship Summit designed to assist businesses of all kinds in creating apprenticeship programs on Tuesday, Nov. 14 at the Monroe Country Club. 

Apprenticeships combine on-the-job and classroom instruction. Apprentices work for their employers while also completing coursework at South Piedmont Community College. Attendees will learn about the benefits of apprenticeships, the process involved in creating an apprenticeship, and how South Piedmont can be their partner in their apprenticeship journey.

Temporary Closure of Bonds Grove Road in Marvin 

The N.C. Department of Transportation will close Bonds Grove Church Road between N.C. 16 and Waxhaw-Marvin Road temporarily starting Monday, Oct. 23, weather permitting. The closure is needed so crews can safely replace a pipe under the roadway; the closure is expected to continue through the first week of November. During the closure, a posted detour will take drivers along Waxhaw-Marvin Road, Gray Byrum Road and N.C. 16, returning to Bonds Grove Church Road.

Preserve Your Family History and Memories With the Help of New Library Resource

Bookeye 5 Overhead Scanner

October is Family History Month! Celebrate by preserving your cherished family photos, documents and recipes. The Library has a new scanner called the Bookeye5 that allows you to do this and more. Located inside the Monroe Library, the Dickerson Genealogy and Local History Room offers local history books, family files, Ancestry Library edition, and Enquirer Journal archives.

Annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event

Saturday, Nov. 18, 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Household Hazardous Waste

Do you have leftover paint, pesticides, or other hazardous materials lingering around your home or garage?

Dispose of them safely at Union County Solid Waste's annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event. Union County residents can drop off limited quantities of certain materials for free on Saturday, Nov. 18, between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Shiloh Valley Elementary School, 5210 Rogers Rd., Monroe.

Simply drive through the parking lot and our staff and contractors will assist you with removing items from your vehicle. You can also bring up to five boxes of documents for shredding and any expired or unneeded medications for collection through Operation Medicine Drop.

The event is hosted by Union County Solid Waste and co-sponsored by the City of Monroe Solid Waste Department, Union County Public Schools, and the Union County Sheriff's Office. Visit our website for a list of accepted materials and share with friends and neighbors on Facebook.

Successful Gardner Series

Plants You Can Grow for Holiday Decorating

Join the Master Gardeners for a free Successful Gardener program offered the first Thursday of each month. You must register in advance to attend. On Thursday, Nov. 2, learn which plants you can grow for holiday decorations and partake in a workshop Saturday, Nov. 4.

Free Soil Testing

Don't forget Union County Cooperative Extension offers free soil testing between April and November. Click here for more information about collecting and submitting samples.

Stallings Fest

Celebrate the Town of Stallings at this free community event on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m., at Stallings Municipal Park, 340 Stallings Rd.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Early Detection Saves Lives

While wearing pink raises awareness, it's important to remember to screen and test regularly. Oct. 20 is National Mammography Day, which serves as a reminder to get screened for breast cancer through receiving a mammogram. Early detection can make all the difference in increasing the chances of survival. Learn more about screening and early detection from the Susan G. Komen foundation.

The Union County Public Health Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program provides free breast and cervical cancer screening and follow-up services for women who meet the financial qualifications set by the State of North Carolina. Click here to learn more about this program and eligibility requirements.

National Health Education Week

The third week of October is National Health Education Week which promotes awareness of public health issues and a better understanding of the role of health education.

This Healthy Living column is just one way we work to educate and bring awareness to health topics. Our dedicated team goes out into the community and offers programs on a variety of health topics and partners with many different agencies, hospitals and health organizations, non-profits and churches to promote health, healthy equity and reduce health-related disparities in our community.
