Someone You Know Could Be Affected by Overdose

August 31 is International Overdose Awareness Day

Data suggests that more than 11 North Carolinians died every day from a drug overdose in 2022. International Overdose Awareness Day reminds us to show compassion and support to families and friends who have lost a loved one to overdose, with more than 36,000 North Carolinians having lost their lives between 2000 and 2022

All drugs can cause an overdose, including those prescribed by a doctor, and the signs and symptoms can vary depending on the drug.

Take a look at these fact sheets for the signs of overdose and how to respond:

Don’t be reluctant to call an ambulance for fear of police involvement. Pick up naloxone, used to reverse opioid overdoses, for free at Union County Human Services at 2330 Concord Ave. in Monroe.

Be sure to lock your medications away and take regular inventory of your medication supply. To safely dispose of unused medicines, visit any of these drop box locations.

If you or someone you know is struggling or in a crisis, call or text 988 or chat at 988lifeline.org
