Driver Eligibility Certificates Availability

NCDPI Bulleting Header

A Note from NCDPI: We understand that many districts and schools in the state are facing unimaginable challenges at this time. Our agency remains in touch with local district and school leaders and is committed to supporting students, staff and others through this.

Please note that while the below is considered time sensitive, there is no immediate need or pressure to act on this for districts and schools recovering from the impacts of Hurricane Helene.

Superintendents and Charter School Leaders,

Please find attached an updated PDF version of the Driver Eligibility Certificate (or DEC form.) This new version replaces the current form historically provided by DPI and is approved by the N. C. Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Current supplies may be exhausted before using the new form.

Pursuant to the requirements listed in G.S. 20–11 and SBE Policy DRIV–004, a DEC shall be issued to students who will submit to the DMV for licensing. This new format should not impact your current issuance processes which must be signed by the principal or designee. For security, recommendations are that these should be printed at the district level and distributed locally or printed when needed. Local driver education funds may be used to offset the printing of the forms only.

Please share this information with appropriate staff. If you have any questions or need further clarification, feel free to reach out to, Karl Logan, Section Chief, DPI Driver Education | Driver & Traffic Safety Education at karl.logan@dpi.nc.gov or 984-236-2938.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.
