Maintenance Set for Friday Night

The next Home Base maintenance is scheduled for Friday, May 21.  Currently, PowerSchool is the only application currently set to undergo maintenance.  All other Home Base applications will remain available.

The PowerSchool application will be brought down for one night only, Friday, May 21 at 7 p.m. and returned to service by 7 a.m., Saturday morning, May 22. The application will be made accessible to all users once maintenance is complete.

Note:  Each year, a list of scheduled maintenance windows are published by NCDPI.  This is published in advance to help teachers and administrators better prepare for temporary outages and loss of access.  Please review the 2020-2021 maintenance schedule and put these dates on your calendar. In most cases, the entire window is not necessary and we can return systems to service earlier than listed. If emergency maintenance is required in addition to these scheduled dates, all users will be notified in advance.

New Feature in Canvas: Student Annotation Assignment Type!

Educators can now upload a file as an assignment in Canvas and allow students to annotate directly in Canvas. Watch this brief tutorial video to learn more about this new feature in Canvas. Although annotations are supported in the Canvas Student app, this specific assignment type is not currently supported for mobile devices. If instructors want students to be able to annotate a document via the mobile app, they should also use the File Uploads submission type and provide the original file in the assignment description for students to download and annotate in the app.

Additional Teacher Nominations Needed for Standard Setting

This July, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI), in conjunction with Data Recognition Corporation (DRC), will conduct standard setting workshops for these areas:

  •   End-of-grade reading (grades 3-8)
  •   NCEXTEND1-- (reading (grades 3-8), English II, science (grades 5 and 8), and biology

Some teachers who had previously committed to participate are no longer available.  NCDPI is asking principals and district-level personnel to nominate highly qualified candidates to participate in this important part of the test development process.

  1.   General Ed teachers for NCEXTEND1 Reading (1 from each grade level)
  2.   General Ed 5th and Biology for NCEXTEND1 Science
  3.   EC or EL teacher for General Reading

Please email teacher first and last name, grade level, and teacher email to maxey.moore@dpi.nc.gov

Standard setting will take place the week of July 12.  Teachers will be paid for their time, and if travel is required, travel expenses will be reimbursed at the state rate.

At the standard setting workshops, participants will be trained in all aspects of the standard setting process. No prior knowledge of standard setting is needed to participate. Panelists will use their knowledge of the NCSCOS or Extended Content Standards and their knowledge of students to recommend Achievement Level Descriptors (ALDs) and cut scores to NCDPI. The ALDs and cut scores will define our new levels of achievement.

Nominees will be contacted by DRC to complete an interest and availability survey.
