Teaching Hard History

Join the North Carolina Museum of History and Carolina K-12 for a free Professional Development virtual webinar series, Teaching Hard History. With NC middle and high school educators in mind, this series will explore content and tools for the classroom to teach about our complicated past & its impact on today.

In this first session of Carolina K-12’s and the NCMOH’s virtual “TEACHING HARD HISTORY” series, Dr. Sonny Kelly will discuss the parallels between the events of 1770 and the events of 2020.  This session will also include a particular discussion of strategies for teaching difficult topics, from our nation’s “hard history” to difficult current events, in the public school classroom.

Priority registration for this session is open to North Carolina teachers until July 23, after which the event will be open for national teacher registration. While teachers of any grade or subject may register, the content and pedagogies are likely most relevant for middle and high school teachers. Teachers can receive .2 CEUs for participating, or can combine several online events for a larger certificate.

For more information visit: https://humanities.unc.edu/ck12/ceus-for-virtual-events/ . This program is provided by Carolina K-12 and the NC Museum of History.

2020 K-12 Virtual Summer Seminar

August 3-7, 2020

While often portrayed by overgeneralized representations in the media, the Middle East is a region full of diversity. This virtual, five-day summer seminar for K-12 teachers will counter monolithic narratives about the Middle East by highlighting the plurality of the region. Through both synchronous and asynchronous sessions, the seminar will address the religious, geographic, ethnolinguistic, economic, and cultural diversity found across the Middle East and North Africa.

Taking place August 3-7, 2020, this seminar will provide interdisciplinary content, teaching strategies, and classroom materials to re-energize teachers before returning to the classroom in the fall. The topics presented are teacher-requested, appropriate across grade levels, and will introduce the vast richness of the region.

This seminar is FREE and open to any in-service or pre-service teacher, administrator, school support staff. Registering educators are required to attend a combination of at least FIVE synchronous/asynchronous sessions OF YOUR CHOICE to encourage intensive learning. The schedule allows individual teachers to choose content that interests them most and accommodate individual schedules. Space is limited: please register by August 1, 2020. Full schedule & register here. A certificate documenting completed professional learning hours will be provided to registered teachers.

This seminar is sponsored by the Duke-UNC Consortium for Middle East Studies.

Please contact Emma Harver, Outreach Coordinator, at harver@email.unc.edu with questions. go.unc.edu/mideastseminar

World View Remote Learning Modules

In the spring of 2020, World View developed several professional development opportunities for K-12 and community college educators to advance global education strategies and resources during challenging times.

There are many benefits to this format.

  • Modules provide small doses of learning, done when it is convenient for YOU.
  • Minimal technology is required. A computer or device with Internet capability is necessary and in some modules you must be able to watch and listen to internet-based videos.
  • You can also CHOOSE your own pathway. World View provides content and you choose your path from the choices. Modules can be completed in ANY order!
  • Each module has a concentrated learning objective, an exploration of focused strategy or resource and requires reflection on impact or integration into your own instruction.
  • World View will keep track of what modules you have turned in to us and how many contact hours you have accumulated. From the date of registration, you will have one month to complete ten hours.

Carolina Navigators News and Updates

Carolina Navigators is excited about the new kits that they are working on this summer! Visit the following links to check out their progress so far:

Carolina Navigators would greatly appreciate if you could please take a moment to fill out this short Carolina Navigators and Duke-UNC Area Studies Centers Global Resource Survey as they prepare for the upcoming school year. As a result of changes in K-12 education due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Carolina Navigators and Duke-UNC Area Studies Centers would like to assess what educators want and need in order to globalize their teaching this year, and how we can support that effort. They understand that there is still a lot up in the air for the fall, and that you may not know what your teaching situation will be like yet, but they would still greatly appreciate your feedback.

The NC Museum of History: Make Your Own Museum

The NC Museum of History introduces a new video collection, Make Your Own Museum. In this ongoing series, members of our staff will offer a personal look at various “artifacts” that are near and dear to their hearts. If you get inspired by these stories, make your own museum! You can research objects, create labels, take photographs. And, we would love to see your growing museum—use the hashtag #MakeYourOwnMuseum on social media, and tag the North Carolina Museum of History, too. Have fun!

Google Sites

Google Sites now serves as a central hub for Social Studies educators, administrators, institutions of higher education, and other interested parties. This hub houses the repositories, communications, and recommended resources related to the implementation of the North Carolina Social Studies Standard Course of Study (SCoS). Social Studies educators are encouraged to browse, reference, download, share, discuss, and adapt resources. Use the navigation menu to access information and resources.

Also, be sure to visit the Remote Teaching & Learning of Social Studies Google Sites Page. There, you will find the resources Considerations for Planning and Engaging in Remote Learning and Helpful Hints for Teachers, Students, and Parents to Keep in Mind while at home.

Remember that this is a great time for learning for the sake of learning.  It is the ideal time for teachers and students to focus on the intrinsic value of learning and not just assignments for a grade.  This time of remote learning offers the perfect opportunity to enhance the practice of planning assignments which allow students to deepen their knowledge.

REMEMBER, K-12 Social Studies resources and information can also be found on the shelves of our current LiveBinders.  Click this K-12 SS LiveBinders hyperlink to access all social studies materials!
